for my 19 year old son for facebook, music web browsing and gaming (I know from my other post that proper gaming laptops are out of my price range - but would this be adequate?) thanks for any replies

  • A friend bought one a couple of weeks ago, although his has the Intel CPU which is slightly quicker than the AMD offering.
It's certainly not up to any kind of gaming (save for the most basic), it doesn't come with a CD/DVD drive, and I've seen 3 legged asthmatic dogs run faster.

He got his for £200 from PC World in Farnborough, and neither of us believe it's worth that to be honest. Save for a bit longer and get your son something half decent.

ACER Aspire V5-552 for £315 is much better, but still not great value.
  • If you want a cheap laptop I would recommend having a look at the Medion's website. They make laptops for many supermarkets, but you can buy from them directly. They are owned by Lenovo (who own IBM Computers), so unlike Tesco they have quiet a bit of cloud about computers.

thanks for replies - I thought I'd seen that it did come with a CD/DVD drive as this is one of the things I need. I think it said optical DVD drive - is this different?

that Acer looks good Niftydigits but that doesn't seem to have a CD/DVD drive either. Are these classed as unnecessary these days?

This Lenovo is still available (good CPU and with CD/DVD - useful if loading games from media) but no dedicated graphics card. What games are going to be played?

don't know what games he wants to play to be honest. it's a surprise birthday present and his dad was sounding him out about what he doesn't like about his current Toshiba Satellite something (bought refurbished 3 years ago) and he said it was rubbish on games. The only game I've seen him play was Heroes of Might and Magic which is really old. He used to play games more on his Xbox but he sold that

Heroes Of Might & Magic System Requirements:

    Minimum System Requirements

    Processor: 1.5 GHz
    RAM: 512 MB
    Video Memory: 64 MB

    Recommended System Requirements

    Processor: 2.4 GHz
    RAM: 512 MB
    Video Memory: 128 MB

I can tell you for free right now that the minimum system requirements will not be suitable for fluid gameplay, you need to spend more in order to get something suitable.
