I think there is no need to be so rude, MoneyIneptitude. Virgin were rude, unhelpful and chaotic. I am quite aware other cable companies do this, as I actually wrote, so there is no need to point out the obvious to me either. I understand why they do this, I just don't agree with all their reasons or their methods, and I think it is a form of cartel actually. I've got an opinion and its just as valid as yours. Perhaps hate was too strong a word. How about loathe with a passion? Regardless, I find the attitude of this company reprehensible. Virgin also tried to fiddle me out of £175 at the beginning of my contract too which hacked me off and caused lots and lots of unnecessary stress when I had just moved again. That was another struggle that needlessly reduced me to tears.

Oh. And a further example to actually read my posts properly before you start making hostile comments about things I never said : they have charged me. Just not so much.

    Have a nice day.

The real problem with VM is that the only way to avoid being ripped off compared to new customers is to ring in every year and get a "deal". Along with that deal comes a new minimum term. That tactic means even customers who have been on cable since the days when it was phone and TV only will still be in a minimum term contract.

Don't VM also offer 9 month contracts?

Here's what happened and here's my soapbox.

Virgin did ring me back that same evening. They did waiver some of the fees due, so I am satisfied with outcome Of course I am waiting for all the paperwork to go wrong (!) but in principle they were finally helpful.

However, was it necessary to put me through all this. Really this should have been able to have been dealt with at an earlier stage. Was it really necessary to have to write to the CEO?...
Glad to hear it was resolved, my experience with vm has been good.

(My post was deleted so assume I wasn't meant to post those contact details [for moderator: it was publicly available info at top of a quick google search, and I checked existence of other mse posts with similar details of previous ceo beforehand]).

Unfortunately it happened to me too , I think it's pot luck who answers the phone at Virginmedia and more important wether it is a UK call centre or some other country.
My outcome was to terminate with 30 Day's notice, after I had made alternative arrangements with plusnet the next day had phone call back from Virgin , pitty they were 1 Day too late.

Just for information, Virgin Media are virtually the only cable company in the UK. BT, Talk Talk, Sky etc do not provide their services via cable.

Another point to realise is that the providers do not impose a minimum term simply to prevent customers from going to other companies. The reason they want an ETC on early termination is that it costs them a lot to provide and install equipment and it takes quite some time to re-coup this cost. In other words, they want to make an honest profit from your custom.

I still think you were unreasonable both in your naming of this thread and in further criticism of the company after your issue was resolved. I would only agree with you if other providers did not respond in the exact same way in similar circumstance.

I assumed they had waived the charge completely, so I stand corrected there. However, I still think you were needlessly critical of the company even after your complaint was resolved. You may well "think twice" before becoming a Virgin customer again, but the other providers really are no different I'm afraid.
