It wasn't a silly question (there's no such thing!) but I think your friend may be remembering a bit of publicity some years ago.
I can't remember the details, but some young women with disordered eating patterns were ill after eating enormous amounts of raw cauliflower in a single sitting.

Completely different from the amount a snacking child, or an adult enjoying "crudites" might eat. These young women were ignoring their bodies' warning signs. Normal people could not eat a huge amount of raw vegetables without feeling ill.

Not sure about sweet potatoes, which I think are not potatoes, but some sort of squash. It is true that raw potatoes cannot be digested - so I suspect most people would just be unable to eat more than a tiny amount.

I think I did read something about not eating too many brassica vegetables which include things like broccoli if you have an underactive thyroid but can't remember why.

That is true. Its also cabbages etc. however, the dietician assured me this doesn't mean none, just not huge amounts.

sweet potatoes can be eaten raw - but not yams or ordinary potatoes
  • I was always told not to eat brassicas raw when I was little - I kind of excepted this without ever questioning it (as you often do!) So, after reading the answers on this thread I had a little Google and found this on Wiki:

Cruciferous vegetables can potentially be goitrogenic (inducing goiter formation). They contain enzymes that interfere with the formation of thyroid hormone in people with iodine deficiency.[19][20] Cooking for 30 minutes significantly reduces the amount of goitrogens and nitriles. At high intake of crucifers, the goitrogens inhibit the incorporation of iodine into thyroid hormone and also the transfer of iodine into milk by the mammary gland.[21]

So I guess that so long as you are fit, healthy and are not eating the produce of a small field in one sitting, then they are ok.

All these years I have spent believing what my Auntie told me when I was 7!:rotfl:

My former next door neighbour was horrified that I was cutting herbs out of the garden to put in my cooking.

"Eew - out of the dirty ground!" was her comment. I can only assume she thought they actually grow in little bags in Mr T's.....:rotfl:

Raw carrots are my thing.:drool::drool: I get my DH to cut them into little batons for me.:o

Not keen on sprouts, I have to say, and I won't allow beetroot under my roof. Vile stuff!:eek::eek:
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)

Tee Hee, modern life has rendered people so dim :D:D:D
From what I gather, commercially grown stuff is often grown in liquid manure instead of in 'the dirty ground' - maybe tell your neighbour that you prefer to grow your own for this reason, and watch her face :D

    30 minutes!!!
It would just be a grey mush by then - I do mine for 5/10 !!!

  • I love raw swede. As a kid I used to steal bits when Mum was doing the Sunday lunch. Raw red cabbage, especially the stalks, is yummy too.

The only side effect I can think of (for a healthy person) is that they might get rather windy . . .
