Card Fraud at Petrol Station

Options
Hadn't used my Visa card for a couple of weeks when I bought fuel, within 12 hours over £1600 had been spent online.
I thought it strange when the girl replaced my card in the reader, saying I'd put it in the wrong way, seemed the same way to me.
Police and Visa seemed to take little interest, almost a normal occurence.
I later discovered that the machine gives 2 receipts, customers gives little info but traders receipt has your full card number as well as expiry date. All that a crook needs to buy online is your name and 3 digit security code, both easily seen.

I've stuck a little black insulation tape to obscure the number !

It's a shame the police don't take this kind of thing seriously.

The insulation tape is a good idea, might try that myself :)
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

Any goods ordered should be delivered to the registered address of the card.
Could this just be a coincidence?

The petrol station in which I work only shows the first and last four digits of the 16 digit number along with the card's expiry date on BOTH copies; I don't know what it's like for others who work in Retail?
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.

Not the case my Mum has ordered stuff to my home address in the past, she lives in an area where postage is sometimes more expensive.

The two incidents may not be related.

A similar thing happened to my Father. He blamed the retailer he'd last used his card with. I later discovered that transaction was via PayPal, so they didn't have his card details.

If I was working at a petrol station and steeling people's card details I think I'd wait a few weeks, or maybe even months, before using them, putting some distance between the two events.

When placing online orders, they usually ask for billing address.

It is possible to an extent to reconstruct the full card number from the first and last 4 digits.

Not all merchants check the billing address and most the times you can send the goods to any other address as gift for example.

Yes this kind of thing does happen at other places but i would say it is prevalent at..err..certain petrol stations and restaurants where people deliberate capture card info and use it or pass/sell it on. They may also used card skimmers.

The other routes for fraud are when you ring up and make a purchase over the phone.

A friend had a brand new credit card. It had never been out of the house. She paid for a holiday over the phone with a certain well known holiday company with a london based call centre. That was the only point of contact with the card. A few weeks later the card was used to commit mail order fraud in two high end furniture stores.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
