Thailand ATM or over the counter

Off to Thailand in a few weeks, I have my Norwich and Peterborough Gold Current Acc Debit Card ready.

Can I avoid the Thai ATM charges of around 150thb per transaction by going into a bank branch and withdrawing currency ove the counter using my debit card.

I've read that it's possible to do this to avoid the ATM charges, anyone has any experience of this as from what I can read no Thai ATMs now will dispense cash without charging.

Many Thanks

You can do, but the exchange rate may differ. Try it once and let us now. Some banks may refuse and point you towards the ATM, especially if it is a small amount. Just move one to the next one.

    Hung up my suit!
Take cash and you will get good rates without the charges. I was in Thailand in June and they were offering around 54/55 to the pound in kiosks, but shop around as they can vary a lot.

BTW if you have 50 pound notes they offer a slightly better rate.

If you carry cash though keep bank withdrawal receipts to prove origin or you could be accused of moneylaundering.

This is a good site to check current VISA credit card rate which is currently only 51 Baht before charges. Not good at all !!

You were getting 54 to 55 baht in June because that was the rate then.
Mastercard rate for June 18th: 54.833632

Cash is cost effective, but not at all effective if you lose it.
