I live in Cambridge and can remember as a child I can remember that every year the river Cam was dredged, and piled up onto the sides of the river bank, why has this stopped?
Some say it's a health hazard as it's builts up the side of the bank, but surely this can't be true as cow dung is always on river bank bank, hardly able to stop it,
Perhaps if the goverment had kept the work going places wouldn't be as flooded,
Most people say it's global warming I just don't believe it, stands to reason that if you have a river or stream that has 5 feet deep of mud that water is flowing on top of the mud and eventually over the side of the bank,
It must work out cheaper than million of pounds of insurance payouts,
Come on Gordon Brown dredge the river, when they have gone down:money:

Last year we had a barge holiday on the canals and i know we passed some bits where they were dredging the the canals - they shifted this into containers I think? I didn't pay that much attention really - was too busy trying to keep the boat straight!
So at least in canals they still do it.
I also knwo they did something similar not that many years ago in High Wycombe on the river Wye. So maybe they still do it? (ok on the wye they couldn't leave it on the sides as it's public footpaths etc maybe other places though they can?) Good question thoughDFW Nerd #025DFW no more! My DFW Diary - blah- mildly funny stuff about my journey0
