Flight Delay Compensation

Hi Guys,
Regarding airline delay compensation claims, can anyone tell me whether I would have a claim for my circumstances last year. I sent an email to Thomson but that was ignored (probably typical).
On my arrival at Lanzarote Airport around 13.00, their representative informed me the flight had been delayed till around 19.00 hours because of problems on the incoming aircraft which returned to Gatwick, and check in would not be open for a couple of hours.
I suffer from bad nerves and had taken a tranquilliser to calm myself ready for the flight, but I could not take the waiting time for the delayed flight and had to return to my apartment in Costa Teguise.
It took me 2 weeks to get the confidence back to fly home and decided that another airline with scheduled flights would be less likely for any delay.
The flight TOM4239 on 29 Jan 2013 from Lanzarote (ACE) to London Gatwick (LGW) with the scheduled departure time of 15.55. This flight departed almost 4 hours late from Lanzarote, arriving at London Gatwick3hrs 47mins late.
As they had not opened the ‘check-in’ while I was at the airport, would I be able to claim compensation?
Thanks for any input, coffeecup12.

this should also be on the Thomson thread and not a new one
I would not expect compensation to be payable as you were not on the delayed flight. When a flight is delayed over 5 hours you have the options to take a refund of the flight cost plus compensation if you choose not to travel. As your flight was delayed under 5 hours this would not apply.
You may get a refund of your flight as goodwill. As this was almost 2 years ago did you claim on your travel insurance for the additional costs?0
