New Lenovo B50-70 core i3 very slow

hi just bought the above laptop cheapest i3 i could find and its really slow, slower than my 5 year old last laptop. even the mother in law commented its slower than her 8 year old dell!

when i say slow i mean slow at general web browsing MSE argos ebay etc.

My ipad and phone work fine off same wifi, so assume its not the wifi, any ideas or have i just purchased a really awful laptop?

Most likely a WiFi problem update the WiFi drivers first .
  • Are you using IE?

    Use Firefox or Chrome.

If that doesn't help, you could diddle with your DNS (try 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4).

You could rule out wifi issues by trying it wired.
No I3 machine should be slow. Bring up taskmanager to check what's running. New machines tend to come with commercial AV trials of some sort and most of them are pretty carp so get shot of that sort of thing.
Win 8.1 comes with the equivalent of the old Microsoft Security Essentials built in so you can try it without any alternate AV.

Looking at the specs I would say it is hardware...

As you said cheapest so I would say it has drive speed of 5,400 rpm on the hard drive.. So you can have the faster CPU and plenty of RAM, but if the disk speed is slow it make it sluggish...

5400 drive speed is very common on laptops.

Low/Mid budget ones and IMO people just focus on CPU and RAM rather than crucial part of the process.

Replacing hard drives can be a bit cheap or costly..

The browser application will live in the memory (RAM) and cached files will exist on the hard disk...

A laptop usually has a single hard disk which has process different actives like:
    1. Caching OS Applications & Services
    2. Perform operations Antivirus/Malware programs
    3. Paging File (More memory, the larger the cache file)
    4. Background Applications (Skype, Widgets)

Not everything lives in memory (RAM)

I've bought a couple of the really cheap B50 s ... with the lower processor. And I'm impressed with how good it is.

Uninstall as much unnecessary stuff (most of the Lenovo sofware) and just use Windows Defender.

IMO I would not leave windows defender to protect my system. I use avast paid version, plus me being me I have pfsense firewall installed on separate unit that sits between my machine and cable modem.

Virus/malware is getting sophisticated each day... I know and fully understand I cannot fully protect against it, but will make damn hard for them get in or out.
