Council not thought this through, new bins

To encourage us to recycle more our council have given us new waste wheelie bins, half the size if the previous bins for general waste.
However, because they are half the size of the previous bins they are also half the width.
Think of what happens to a long skinny bin sitting at the edge of the pavement when a slight gust of wind comes along.
Correct! they topple over and spill out their rubbish.
Even the bigger bins sometimes toppled if there was a strong wind.
There are more black bags and rubbish blowing along the road than when we used to put black bags out for the bin lorry before wheelie bins.

Put a brick on the lid to weigh it down, once full of rubbish it should be heavy enough to tackle the wind.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

Or more likely refuse to touch the bin because a brick is commercial builder's wasteThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

At least you have been issued with bins.
Two years ago, our local council (Birmingham) stopped issuing us with black bags for general waste. We were supposed to be issued with three wheelie bins, one for paper, one for glass and tins and another for general waste. Most of the city now have these bins but the council appear to have run out of money so in our area, we do not have any of the three bins and are having to pay for bags ourselves.
On top of this, they have introduced a one off £35 charge for a green waste bin for grass and garden waste. If you do not have one, they will not take your garden waste. If you are elderly or cannot accommodate the large bin, the council charge you £35 for 35 green waste bags (so you have to buy more when you run out).
We are already paying for refuse collection as part of our council tax so why should we pay twice? So much of it is being dumped, it must be costing the council more money to clean it up.0 -
Not looking forward to any more bins!
In a row of 8 small semis, with equally small gardens, 4 are occupied by one person and all have 4 large bins.0 -
You must live in a really windy area! We have the smaller bins and the bigger bins and the street seems quite windy to me. The lids often blow open if the bins are facing the wrong way but I've only ever seen one blown over when it was empty and the wind was really strong that day.0

Have to say we have only been in our new place since May but we also have 1 recycling bin thats "full size" and one non-recycling thats skinny plus a small food waste bin. No green waste collection is offered but they will sell you a composting bin if you want.
Collection is every tuesday and each week alternates between recycling and non-recycling but food waste is collected weekly.
Not had any problems with the skinny bin falling over in the wind at all. Tends to be rather full after 2 weeks even with recycling, due to the stupid amount of packaging companies insist on using these days and perfectly stable even when its perched on the edge of the lawn
Annoyingly though of the 10 new build properties 6 of us got the skinny bins and 4 got the full sized ones with no rationalisation of who got which.0 -
I have noticed that the smaller bins tend to fall over more than the larger ones. Happened yesterday when we had quite a bit of gusty wind.
On a side note, put our green bin out on wednesday and is has disappeared......who 'borrows' a green bin:)
Wouldn't mind but just looked at the council website and if you need a new one for whatever reason you just email them and they give you one for free. oh well.0 -
And knowing the bin men they will take it away with them.once full of rubbish it should be heavy enough to tackle the wind.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A
