So true !!! When downloading browsers etc take the 'custom' option and untick superfluous options. Also when uninstalling software, do the same as some try to add software even when uninstalling.
To speed up my PC I do a complete restore of the whole operating system occasionally from a copy hard disk. Failing that, I have a look at 'programs' on the Control Panel and uninstall unnecessary stuff.
Also look at 'task manager' with 'show all processes from all users' option and you may see what is grabbing your CPU. I currently have SVCHOST with a memory leak which I have to kill on startup a number of times as it grabs 100% CPU. I think it is a bug rather than a virus.
