have you checked the last year's worth of readings to see if they were all actual readings or estimates? if you compare the last 12 months' usage to the previous 12 months is it similar?

it maybe just have been underestimated and you are now catching up.

i take my own meter readings every month - good practice that i advise everyone to follow.

You don't say what the 444 indicates. If it is cu metres, then I calculate my provider would have charged £193.72 inc VAT for this amount of gas. Remember when you provide a meter reading the supplier takes your previous actual reading from your present reading (ignoring any estimated readings) and calculates the amount used. From this he will deduct all credit paid. You need to check when you last provided an actual reading and do your own calculation.

as above, please confirm all the readings you are looking at are ACTUAL readings? not estimates. if they are estimate's there's your problem i expect.
also it would be helpful if you typed in sentences.

  • SORRY im writing from my mobile. These are actual readings, Also they now estimate that i will use 32000kwh of gas over the next 12 months.
  • How many are you using the hot water and do you cook every night. It does sound very high to me, My Husband, Step son and I used about 14,000 last year in a 3 bedroom house.
  • Ok there are 2 adults and four young children. We cook every night and the kids have a shower every morning and nightime QUICK shower as well may i add.

Have you checked for a metric/imperial meter mix-up? That is, if you have a metric meter each meter unit is about 11.2 kWh but if imperial about 33 kWh.

How many meter units have you used and how many kWhs does the bill say that translates to. Does that check with your meter type?

I may be way off the mark here OP, but I remember a time our Gas bill was astronomically high for nearly two Years.......up until we discovered we had a small gas leak from a hole in the pipework.

I think nowadays there is a pressure check they can do on the pipes to assess there are no leaks, but in those days it was discovered accidentally, emanating from a lead pipe and using a naked flame, as the meter was in the cellar where we had no lighting.:eek:

The gas meter is is metric i have done my sums and everything is as they say it is just done my first 24 hour reading and i have used 6 units this is with no central heating on just hot water and cooking. Been looking round the web and people say the use about maybe 5 units with the heating on a day or without 1 unit a day. Something is not right here surely. I have calculated that we use 5.87 units a day for gas over 159 days i would like to add we were not here for 2 weeks.
