This is annoying, my son used to wear a purple (!) blazer which cost £45 and it was cheap, nasty nylon with buttons that didn't stay on longer than a couple of days.
I got spare buttons from ebay or Amazon (can't remember which, cost me less than £3) and sewed them on myself. My buttons never come off!
You could complain to the school but I wouldn't bank on compo for "distress", it's not like your little one is in mortal danger from lack of buttons, is it?"I may be many things but not being indiscreet isn't one of them"0 -
You can ask for compensation for the distress caused. The supplier could probably use a good laugh.0

Any buttons sewn on by machine are vulnerable to the "pull loose end" sort of detaching. Kids can't resist pulling loose ends I think, most adults can't either. The solution is to put a dab of clear nail polish on the inside stitches, then the stitching won't pull out.
As a long suffering parent though I now check the buttons on every single new garment that comes into this house and restitch at least half of them, for security. I also save spares from old outworn school uniform, if it's not worth passing on. That way all the potential "distress" is reduced to barely noticible inconvenience.Val.0 -

the buttons on the cardi from last year also fell off.
If its not fit for the purpose, don't wear it.
Any school speccing and insisting on inadequate uniform items is not going to get far with any sanctions against you for wearing something that does do the job. They could also be leaving themselves open to far more serious action if the faulty clothing contributes to accident/injury because of the fault.
And this should really be in the Praise Vent And Warnngs Board, unless you are actually related to the supplier concerned.0 -
