Yes, reducing red meat and eating something else reduces your risk of bowel cancer.

    .

some area of debate though on what is the main cause.

    e.g.
meal A - tenderloin with broccoli and Peas. with pigs fed on a high natural diet including nuts etc.
Meal B - sausage roll with chips & gravy.

In theory may give very difference incidence of bowl cancer.

So what's rubbish, all foodstuffs that aren't sausage meat?

I don't know, you have to ask the people.

people who eat red meat get MORE bowel cancer, but people who eat little, or no red meat get LESS bowel cancer.

Don't be stupid, you can't get more bowel cancer and you can't get less bowel cancer. You either get it or you don't.

    1:13983816 and 1:6991908, so what?

The point is even doubling my chances of winning still means I am unlikely to win, because the odds are so high to start with.

Saying something increase a risk is absolutely pointless unless you say what the risk is before and afer.

e.g saying "your chances of getting bowel cancer are 1:13983816 but if you eat lots of red meat the chances will be 1:6991908"

Of course you know what happens if you avoid getting bowel cancer don't you.........................You get cancer somewhere else, or some other ailment!

I lived in Newmarket for awhile as a teenager and accquired the taste for Musk's Newmarket sausages. https://www.musks.com Musk's purveys bangers to Her Maj.

They do a gluten-free version now also available from Ocado. 75% pork and does contain sodium sulphite :(

The organic pork sausages from Abel & Cole are 94% pork and gluten free, these are my second choice.

For a change, I like Laverstoke Park organic lamb merguez sausages which are additive, nitrate and gluten free and 86% lamb.

Korker's sausages are very well known in Kent & Sussex and used to have these a lot as a kid but prefer others now. Not bad sausages tho.

I don't think cheaper sausages necessarily taste worse, IMO a bit of fat and some herbs makes a better sausage. But I'd rather not eat pig rectums thanks :( I try to avoid additives whenever poss.

Worst sausages IMO are Helen Browning's Speedy Sausages yuck !

I got the 'healthy eating' ones in Tesco this morning, after checking the traffic lights they seem better than most.

We always grill bacon and sausages. I fry with various things - organic Extra Virgin olive oil, dripping, lard, organic ghee, organic unsalted butter - depends on what I'm frying.

Organic sausages and bacon usually do contain nitrates (though may be from natural sources) because otherwise bacon can look very grey. Only nitrate free bacon I know of is from Laverstoke Park and I didn't rate it.

    Best bacon IMO

Helen Browning organic smoked back bacon, Sainsbury's

    or unsmoked from Ocado

I haven't found any nitrate free organic ham yet. However any Parma ham/prosciutto with the gold crown on packaging is completely additive free and it will go really crunchy if cooked. Cheapest I know of is either Lidl or on offer at Sainsbury's/Marks & Spencer.

My type of sausages are not in the poll: Quorn or Linda McCartney's (and before anyone says vegetarian sausages don't taste nice - probably never having tried them mind - in my opinion they do!).

That's because the poll is about MEAT content.

No offence but your reply is like many here "my opinion isn't really what the thread is about, but I'll post it anyway". It just confused the real topic in my opinion.

    No option for butcher's sausages?
    See above.
I would expect butchers sausages to be better quality overall, and as the opinions I was after were from people who bought supermarket sausages, I didn't include butcher's in the poll.
  • Hi
I rear my own free range pigs, dispatch them at 9 months and make my own sausages, rib roasts, hocks etc. Can not get better than knowing where the pig came from, what it ate, the life it had and how it was dispatched and butchered.
Debt is a symptom, solve the problem.

No offence, but a poll question of 'What sausages do you usually buy?' is exactly that and not limited to meat whatsoever. Also threads evolve. Who are you to say what can and cannot be posted?

Just 'my opinion' of course (and I have a funny feeling that's what this forum is all about!).

  • I got two 'glocester old spot 'bangers from my local Dobbies deli. They cost me just over a pound but by jingo they were tasty, dug them out of the freezer this morning and had them with mash and cabbage tonight for dinner.Very yummy and I shall be getting more at the end of the month for Christmas at DDs
