I think you agreed to the terms...

Most Gift Experience Voucher companies offer some degree of flexibility at a price, and indeed some companies offering these experiences have their own terms and conditions

I would not think that a cancellation penalty of 1/3rd seems unreasonable, particularly as if you cancel then the chances of them getting someone to replace your place are slim to none depending on the lateness of cancellation

    Post #1:
I had a gift given to me which is an experience day. I booked it today over the phone and the lady told me the date is non-transferable. Without thinking, stupidly, at the time, I booked a date the next working day (a Monday) after my impending jury service is due to end. Obviously there's a chance my jury service could extend and I may miss the experience day.

I also haven't got that date booked as leave from work and now, thinking about it, doubt it would be approved because of the timing. At the time I booked, I expressed I could only do weekends but should have checked the day of the week myself. The lady told me the date, but not the day of the week. Having expressed I could only do weekends, I stupidly assumed it must be a Saturday.

The T&Cs sent to me by email afterwards state that one date change is permitted, but subject to an admin fee of £50 (about a third of what the experience costs, which seems extortionate to me).

I plan on phoning them tomorrow to see whether they'll let me change the date, but just wanted some opinions as to where I stand legally?

    TIA.

Thanks. I don't want to cancel, just change the date...

There is no cancellation penalty; if you cancel, they just don't refund the cost paid (which I didn't pay anyway, as it was a gift to me, but I'd hate for it to be wasted).

The £50 is to change the date of the booking.

The experience is around six weeks' away.
