Arh so it is designed to be changed.

I think there are some orange and blue tabs for the on/off times.

As in richies link, you can use a small screwdriver to move them.

    Turn the power off.
    Unscrew the front.
The wires should say in the back.
    Make adjustment as per instructions.

Make sure the heater does not come on early as this really will make a difference to economy. Leave yourself an hour (or half hour minimum)
  • The (1) default setting on the 'cams' in the water controller is 2130-0900, the decision when the cheap rate switch (2) starts and stops is out of your control, a radio timeswitch signal is sent and the water controller will auto switch between off peak & on peak rate supply. You really do not want to mess with the 'cams, which are set inside the box with a screwdriver.

You get as footyguy and lstar337 have said whatever the timeswitch sends you and the timeswich sends you whatever your tariff allows, ie E7 or E10 as an example. I'm at a total loss as to why any one would want to mess with this - that's what the teleswitch & thermostat is for - why anyone wants to get their stcky little fingers on a perfectly working and serviceable part I've no idea.

I don't think the Horstmann timer is radio controlled, hence why the activation times should be set on installation to suit the off peak times of the supply.

Yeah, it is the meter that is radio controlled. Pretty sure that is what Ritchie meant.

there are several ways in which the cheap rate is controlled.

A timer by the meter to select it by time
    B A radio teleswitch

Also an output could be provided which only switches on during cheap rate. This is the best system so you can't ever accidentally use heaters on the peak rate.

Presumably the OP doesn't have the benefit of this type of set up, hence why they have a Horstmann controller ;)
  • In the dozens I've seen, I've never seen one that's not digital [almost all are AMPY]. If non digital old analogue meters exist in an old farmhouse, and they might not have had a meter change in 40 years [doubtful] they would not be the norm. For myself I'll assume 99% of the UK is teleswitched and digital and I respond that way in this forum. An AMPY [or equivalent water controller] should always be fitted.

NOTE : The primary purpose of the Hortsmann or any other brand water controller is to allow the top immersion to function [off peak] while isolated from the [on peak] bottom stat & immersion. If with a Horstmann you ever switched on the 60 minute [top immersion] during off peak rate at for example 1150HRS and the [off peak] came on automatically with the teleswitch the Horstmann would throw an isolate and protect you and your equipment whilst at the same time switching off your expensive [and now pointless] peak rate top immersion element.

    I disagree.

The primary purpose of a Horstmann controller is to control the timings of the main immersion heater that would otherwise be linked to a permanently live (although probably switched) circuit to gain maximum advantage of E7 electricity.

    - yep - agreed - that's exactly what I wrote about the switching and protection
    - the [tariff] timings you already agreed are out of the householders control
    - the cams are legacy for the old white meter and analogue switching systems

NOTE : I've never seen a single immersion cylinder on a PartL install ever.
