Year 8 homework

how much homework should Year 8s be getting from a CoE Acadaemy?
my kid's school only gives approx. 20-30 mins per week; plus the odd project during each half term, but even that does not take more than 10mins extra per week when I see my kid doing his work. I thought he go more homework in primary school!
what do other schools give?

My daughter is in year 7, and gets two pieces of homework per night. On average it's about 1 hour per night.
I would not be happy with such little homework, talk to the head of year.0 -

My DD is in Year 7 as well, and she has about an hour a night as well.0 -
My dd is yr 8. Some nights she has 2-3 hrs which I think is horrendous and others at least 1 hour. I believe that 1 hr per night should be quite sufficient. What your dd is getting seems a bit too little? I would definitely speak to the head of year about it.
Are you sure your dd is actually doing all the homework set.....I'm not saying she's not, just seems very little?0 -
Is it possible that he's just rather good at it and is thus finishing it up in a quick manner?
It is often hard to quantify homework. Back when I was at school we were supposed to be getting 2-3 hours a night but I never did anywhere near that much because I didn't have any issue with the subjects.
I found that the amount of time spent doing homework was directly related to how good the teacher was who was setting assignments. With good teachers there was much less "prep" time required because of the understanding of the subject I had already gained during lesson time. Some assignments required outside research but even then if you know what it is you're supposed to be doing, then you should be able to find out the facts and figures you need to support your assignment in a much speedier manner.0 -
As a teacher, I set my Y8 class homework once a fortnight, which should take about 45 minutes.
It is quite hard collaborating with other teachers, on when each subject sets homework, so my Y8 tutor group tell me that some nights they have none, and other nights they have far too much!
30 mins a week is too little, so I would ask the school about their homework policy.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -

I assume a Year 8 pupil would have more than one teacher so Pinkshoes' 45 minutes could be multiplied by 8 or so0

Does the school not publish a homework timetable, or in some other way let parents know what to expect?
Is your child doing the hwk at school in the lunch hour?0 -
Turtle, 45 minutes a week from one teacher would to me indicate that the child would get more than 30 mins a week from all teachersGive me the boy until he's seven and i'll give you the man.0
