Buying House - Tenant refusing to leave...

Hi Guys,
After finally finding a house and everything running smoothly we had had delays from the seller. Finally found out why. They had given notice to the tenant 2 months ago (due to run out at the end of the month) but the tenant has just told them she doesn't want to leave. It sounds as though she's staying put so she can get evicted to help her get a council house (this is what we've been told by the agents).
I've had a brief read up and it seems as though this could take a while to sort out. We haven't exchanged yet, but have completed a survey which would be the only money we'd lose if we find another house. Is it likely to take several months? The mortgage offer runs out in March...
Is it worth the hassle sticking with this house. We have a very similar priced one around the corner we can see on Friday...

Wont take several months if the s.21 expires at the end of the month.
However, there's no harm in looking at alternatives.0 -
Don't believe a word agent, they certainly won't understand process for getting council housing.
Do ahead & buy. No probs. You become landord, tenants your tenants0 -

I get the feeling they want to live in the house........Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -
Yes, we are first time buyers and this is supposed to be our first house. Don't think that we'll want to shack up with this lady!
Estate agents have been crap and so have the lawyers so not really getting any advice from either of them (not that I'd listen or believe the agents..)0 -
Pop round, introduce yourselves. You'll quickly get a feel for whether they really intend to stay.3.9kWp solar PV installed 21 Sept 2011, due S and 42° roof.
17,011kWh generated as at 30 September 2016 - system has now paid for itself. :beer:0 -

I'm a tenant, and if someone who wanted me to leave my home so they could buy it came round to suss me out I would not be best pleased.0 -

Obviously you don't know whether this is indeed the case (as opposed to there's been a mess-up with the s.21 documentation, for example), but this situation does crop up quite a bit. Councils say the tenant has made themselves voluntarily homeless (and therefore not eligible for help from them) if they move out before receipt of the eviction notice.
I agree there's no harm in looking elsewhere to get a feel for whether you really want to wait for this house.0 -

Understood, well sort of. A tenancy is a temporary arrangement so you know that sooner or later you will be leaving - is it fair to be angry with a couple who has simply chosen to buy rather than rent? The house is your temporary home but not your property.
