Quote for Skirting, Picture Rail, and Bay Window Frame

Hi,
I've not yet had a quote for the following, but have a couple of people coming early next week, and i'm looking for a ball park guide of where those quotes ought to be;
The room is 4.5 x 5m and the skirting and picture rail need to be replaced. The existing skirting is 167mm high, and the picture rail is 70mm.
We're also having new windows installed, the installer has quoted £200 to finish the surround with mahogany, but thinking it might be better to throw this work to the joiner; 1) to make the job more appealing to him which I hope will be reflected in the price, and 2) to ensure the finish is consistent throughout.
We'd like the skirting, picture frame, and window frame to be replaced with new hardwood.
The existing picture frame and skirting have either been removed, or will be removed for the joiner starting.
We will apply any staining to the wood ourselves.
I'm guessing this will be a days work to a good joiner, including materials i'm thinking around £700-800 cash?
Does that seem about right?

Sounds about right, bottom price with materials I would estimate around 650, depending on suppliers and spec of skirting and picture rail could go up to as you say around 800. Be aware of some cowboys trying to quote for mahogany but using meranti or sapele.0
-
Meranti is a horrible timber, its pale pink, its soft so it damages easily, fluffy grain means its difficult to get a good finish and for outside purposes its not very durable.
Cost wise theres not much difference from Sapele or Meranti but Utile is a fair bit more expensive.0 -
sapele is within the same family as other african mahogany but what I meant was at the price estimated I'd be looking at a south american mahogany, many people may not be able to see the difference but there certainly is a difference with the cost, fair enough if OP wants to go with sapele providing they get charged accordingly.0

I don't disagree with regards to paying for what you get but no one in their right mind would use Honduras Mahogony or Brazilian mahogony for a picture rail . Its a bit like buying the finest quality English oak and painting it.............
The OP states "We will apply any staining to the wood ourselves".So I don't think they will be wanting hondurus or Brazilian Mahogony. Regarding the price quoted to the OP , from the info they posted I don't see how anyone can give an idea of price from the vague info posted....... The OP could ask for a quote to supply only and also supply and fix .
Just my opinion of coarse .0 -
definitely agree that fine mahogany is wasted on picture rail but some people will specify it, I'm sure the OP is quite sane and just looking at utile or sapele but I've done plenty of higher spec jobs where customers have specified a SA mahogany on things such as skirting, dado, picture rail etc and even things such as painted walnut:(
I think the Op has listed enough info for a vague price such as what I suggested, after all there's the room size, height of skirting, that's enough to give a rough price on materials and a guess at labour involved. There's plenty of variables that would influence quotes of course but a rough estimate is easy enough with just room size etc on what is more or less a straight forward skirting job.0 -
Dont most people do away with the picture rail?0
-
picture rail has had it's day as such and isn't generally "used" even when people have it fitted, but there's certainly a lot of properties that suit having picture rail fitted in certain rooms .0

Hi All,
Many thanks for all the replies, much appreciated!
Good to hear i'm on the right track price wise, only had one quote back so far, which was just over £1000, still awaiting another to come back.
As far as the quotes go, the one i've had back provided no breakdown, the one i'm awaiting the joiner already told me it would take 2-days, and as such he would be quoting £400 for labour, and would then add the cost of the materials on top. How much would you guestimate for materials?
With regards the picture rail, we had considered doing away with it, however our property is very old, circa 1920, and the ceilings are very high, the picture rail kinda breaks the wall up a bit.

If you're going to use sapele then roughly £300-400 or utile £400-500,
just depends on what style of skirting and picture rail you're looking for and what local suppliers are like, I'd reckon those prices being bottom end to be honest averaging the skirting at about £10 a metre for sapele. if you are actually going with a sa genuine mahogany you'll probably be looking at around £600.
If the other guy is saying two days then the first quote of just over a grand should be about right, I take it you're going to have it fixed via screws and plugged?0
