    Thanks.

What a palava :( Feel bad for my partner taking the hit as well - especially when it wasn't as if I rammed into the other car on purpose, I was trying to navigate around another car that had come up against me on the narrow road.

If I call my insurance tonight anyway, tell them what happened and give them their reg no etc, do I still need to call the police if the other party doesn't get in touch? I guess they'll advise on what to do.

Hopefully the owner gets in touch and it comes to an amicable solution without an insurance claim.

Then you should just notify the insurance of the incident but no claim.

Is that acceptable? How would that work?

They go to a garage and get a quote? Wouldn't I have to wait for the quote to see if it's viable meaning that the insurance wouldn't be informed for a few days....?

You can still notify the insurance, just say you are deciding whether to claim.

Worth noting the third party could claim a rental car and request main dealer costs, on the other hand a Smart repair may be able to sort it where it stands if it's not too bad.

AH I see. A bit clearer in my head now.

So essentially I go home, call the insurance - tell them what happened, tell them I don't need to claim for my car as lack of damage, tell them I've left details for the other person to contact me on, give them their reg no etc and essentially wait to see what transpires?

Yeah, just make it clear to them at this point you don't want to make a claim, just notifying them.

That would be the correct way of doing it. Others would say not to bother if it's being sorted amicably.

All you need to do as far as insurance is concerned is report the incident.

If your partner has unprotected NCD which you are impacting then if it is cost effective after the matter is concluded you can reimburse your insurer their outlay and get the lost NCD reinstated.

The law (which you seem to be breaking) says that in the event of you causing damage to someone else's property and don't/cannot exchange details at the scene you must report the incident to the police ASAP.

Fairynuff! Will call 101 straight after I have called the insurance company tonight then if that is still required (obviously if the other party hasn't been in touch). Hopefully that will sort the matter out.
