Fingers crossed i get as lucky as i did with my last Honda diesel that lasted me 6 years with none of the common diesel issues apart from 1 injector that needed replacing at a cost of £500.
Incidentally what is PSA?
Plenty of people talking about it here - it may be worth you reading some of this stuff, as problems with the 1.6 PSA do tend to be rather 'when' not 'if'.

Since swapping from a PSA diesel to a petrol car I could literally spill half a tank of fuel on the floor each week and drive everywhere in 2nd gear and still be financially better off.*

If it is a practical motor rather than a statement I do tend to look at the cabbies, especially since you want to transport adults on occasion.
For the same reason I have the older 1.8 petrol Avensis. Quiet, comfy, chain cam so easy on the pocket and a solid 40mpg combined. More on a motorway run. What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
Got to be 1.2tsi octavia for me. Grew longer when updated in 2013 and increased in price. So go for before 2013 which will not be so long. Loads of room. What does it matter if it looks like a saloon but is a hatch? Only thing i'm not sure of is mpg in city driving, other than that it's octavia for me. Test drive one and you will be sold. Read the reviews.0

I'd like to drive that 1.2 tsi, as it must weigh less than a tonne to have "decent in-gear grunt" with 175nm of torque.0

Thanks for that link, it makes scary reading. I see all the people suffering had older cars from about 2005 to 2009, mine is 2011 so hopefully they made some changes to the engine by then. Fingers crossed.0 -

Sadly the 1.6 bomb is still ticking. I hope for your sake you got a good one; the lesson seems to be to make sure you use absolutely the right oil spec, change it regularly, and do decent runs to make sure it's up to temperature and not failing DPF regens to pollute the oil with diesel.0 -

It does sound like it is still ticking but it is ticking slightly quieter after 2010 if this post on this very forum is to be believed:

I will keep an eye out for injector leaks and also make sure that I change the oil for decent stuff regularly. Thanks for the heads up.0 -
Thank you all for your comments/suggestions.
I'm definitely not getting a diesel - I know someone who does a lot more motorway journeys than I do and still had the dpf go (quote of £800 to fix it!) so I'm really not keen on them.
I think I will go and have a look at a few things over the weekend and see how they look/feel.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -

At the heart of many a Ford or Volvo is a French ticking time bomb.
Is that only diesels? Or do I need to worry about dodgy french engines in petrol cars too??Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0
