I know a few owners who believed a lump on the tail was a sign of a break, each time it was a cancerous growth. The animal needs to go to the best asap, while it would be nice for you to keep kitty if he/she doesn't have a home of you don't want to or cannot afford the vet bills unfortunately you aren't in a position to keep kitty.

Put some "found" posters up in your area.

If an owner doesn't come forward, hand it in to a rescue if you can't afford the vet bill.

If it is a neutered boy it will be probably chipped and has an owner.
Did you put posters around your area?

It really does nto look like a stray at all.

Good idea - though probably not a poster like this one:

Much kudos to you for doing the right thing, OP.

Its a 8 month old female, no chip.
Vet not in the least worried about the broken tail, says it will be fine as its still working as a tail should.

Am now trying to get it in a shelter.

Thanks all good comments and bad.
    63 mortgage payments to go.

I don't think it would be right to keep the cat if you can't afford it.

You're very kind to take the cat in for now. Hopefully the owner will be found soon.

Apparently I ain't supposed to keep a cat because I can't afford vet bills, this despite me having my previous cat for 15 years.

If you can't afford medical care for an animal then unfortunately you cannot appropriately provide that animal unless you rehome them if they ever become ill or injured, which is a horrible situation for both pet and owner. Being able to afford vet treatment is as vital as affording their food.

    But you yourself said:

Clearly people were concerned about this statement. If animal is unwell/in pain and needs a vet - one has to have the means to provide the help. No matter what. Yu may have had a cat for 15 years and never had any major health issues to deal with but this s not always the case with pets.

No reason to get upset when people are concerned following what you stated yourself.
