BT - 18 month contract, but moving to poor line area?

Hiya,
A couple of months back, we signed up to a new broadband contract with BT (slightly lower monthly fee, and faster - 'up to 8mb') We knew at the time we'd be moving house at some point, and BT assured us we could transfer our connection.
Well... we got the keys to the new house on Monday. and the faffing commenced! B/F has arranged for the broadband to be set up at the new place... but BT told him that the strength / quality of the connection there is not very good, and we can only expect 'up to 3mb'.
So, my thoughts are...
- Can we get out of the contract, due to them being unable to provide the service we want? (And then go with cable, or another provider that might be able to provide a faster line?)
- Can we downgrade if necessary and pay less for a slower connection? (We prefer not to)
Anyone with any insight into BT's workings? We have 2 weeks to change our mind about the broadband going into the new house!

what you are getting now is on BT Wholesale's ADSL Max product - what you get now depends on your line length from your phone exchange - so if your close to it 6/7mb, if you're further away 2/3mb, and if your just on the outskirts 512kb/1mb
BT have just you the speed your likely to get in your new property - what you get now I don't know - go to www.speedtest.net, and this will give you some sort of indication
But no, you cannot get out of the contract as they are providing you with the service you want, which is 'up to 8mb' - this means anything up to 8mb in ISP terms (ie. anything between 400kb and 7.1mb in reality)
Slow speeds won't make the price cheaper unfortunately
3mb is all you'll be able to get from any ADSL Max based broadband providers - which is pretty much all of them
And by the way, by moving it is more or less likely that you will be renewing your contract with BT0
