Autoaid for me too. When I had a problem with my car they were great and payment was in my bank in a few days.

Was that a direct transfer? I was told they only send out a cheque and by second class post. Allow 10 days AFTER they have processed the claim.

It always used to be a cheque posted out. Having said that, I had to call them out about 3 months ago, and they settled the bill directly with the recovery firm, so I didn't have to pay or reclaim anything. I don't know why, as the thing that puts some people off is that they have always been a "pay and reclaim" service. I don't know whether they're gradually changing their approach, or simply that I've been with them for many years now - but I'm not complaining :-)
  • Glad it's not just me confused here, i'm with autoaid but never needed to use them yet, following Hammylou's report i was worried i'd bought into a cheaper service, like many here depending on the breakdown i want the option of getting the car home or to a mechanic of my choice.
Far as i'm aware it's one level of cover only at autoaid.

With Autoaid you have the choice of being taken to your destination or your home or a garage.

Still have not been paid from a claim I sent in on 21st July. Have phoned twice and can't get any sense out of them as they say they have sent a cheque (hasn't arrived) for a different amount and a home-start incident which it wasn't. Latest is 'they will ring me back next week'; we'll see.

Certainly won't be renewing if they don't get this sorted as there is no point if you can't rely on prompt and hassle-free payment. Just glad it wasn't for a huge amount.

another +1 for autoaid from me.

I dont like roadside repairs anyway - usually just a bodge since they wont have any of the specific tools/equipment/parts to fix the problem properly.

would rather get the car towed home (i do all my own work) or a trusted local garage to me for the work.

Any time i've called out the AA, or subsequently Start Rescue (3 times in ten years) they've just put the car on a low loader and taken the car and me wherever i wanted.

That would totally put me off.

Enough hassle when a car breaks down without having to run after the payment.

Update. From what I can work out (AutoAid have not said so themselves), they have my claim down as a home start which has a maximum claim amount of £65. Now how they arrive at a home start when I was hundreds of miles from home is a good question.

On their form in the 'Recovery' section, one question is 'Miles Travelled' into which I put 0 because the car was not 'recovered' anywhere, it was roadside assistance only. So maybe their IT or staff interprets this as a Home Start without taking account of the supplied details of where the breakdown occured.

Anyway I have now received a cheque for £65 and they say they will send a further cheque for the balance. My tip, if you make a claim for roadside assistance, is don't put zero for miles travelled in case it gets interpreted as a Home Start claim!

Just a word of warning Ref: Auto Aid, I took this policy up based on the MSE recommendations a couple of weeks ago. We are not married and when we received our policy documents only had one surname applied to us both. I have spoken with Auto Aid who agree their policy does not cover unmarried couples living at the same postal address. I stipulated that this is not in their T & Cs, chap went away and tried waffling that it is covered, but couldn't state where. My point here is that firstly we have been discriminated against because he agreed that the policy covers both married couples and civil partners but shows no exclusions for common law partners/siblings etc, and therefore our policy is invalid. Please be aware that this policy only covers as stated above. For me it was a full refund after a bit of a battle but made me even more aware that cheapest isn't always best.
