We stop all presents at 18.
I think you need to draw the line at 18 or 21 otherwise when do you stop?

As other posters have said it can vary from family to family and financial circumstance.

We stopped buying for adults as it was just getting to expensive. Consequently my kids thought I'd been really naughty as I hardly get anything!

From my aunt and uncles we stopped getting things after we turn 21 as family quite big. Still get cards and meet for a drink etc.

I still buy for niece and nephews but we put a limit on what we spend. This means they can 'ask' for something they want up to that amount rather then letting me choose as they know I will purposely get them something daft! LOL!
Don’t put it down - put it away!

TBH my nieces do not even have the decency to thank us for the gifts they have received in the past, last year I gave them a £20 soap and glory gift set plus a lovely scarf each and they did not even acknowledge they had received it! I always take it in on xmas eve so they can open it in the morning and they do not even say thank you when they visit on xmas day!

ok in your case, I would buy this year for all 3 nieces, and possibly next year (but not £30 worth each, I'd scale that down now) until your youngest niece in that family is 18. Tell them in advance of youngest's 18th year that when she is 18, the pressies will stop for them all.

I have 2 grown-up nephews who are brothers, pressies stop generally at 21 in our family, and my youngest nephew of those 2 is 21 now. I'm going to buy them both something this year (I've just always continued to get oldest one a little something) and then tell them that after this year, they will not be getting any christmas pressies from me.

Do the nieces and nephews get stuff for you or for your children?

I don;t think there is any hard and fast rule.

Personally I tend to go with the approach that if someone is an adult, then I am happy to continue with an exchange of gifts - if they are not interested in that (so if there's been a couple of years where I've got something for them but they have not reciprocated) then I will stop getting gifts ad just send a card.
For children, it varies depending on my relationship with their parents and to a degree on whether the gifts are acknowledged - I take the view that if someone is not interested enough to bother saying thank you then getting a gift from me is clearly not important to them, and I may as well save my money and energy :)
No one has ever commented on it and I'm still on good terms with those relations I don;t buy for, so I assume I am right and that my gift giving was not that important!

  • Giving gifts to your family depends on their personality. Like for my mom, she love personalized things so I'm going to give her a scrapbook this Christmas. And for my sis who really love to have fun on the beach, I'm gonna give here a beach towel.

These are excellent as beach towels unless she needs a specific one. They're perfect for going to hot countries where you just need a quick rub down rather than something to stop you shivering.;) They're basically like large tea towels. They weigh next to nothing, take up very little room in your luggage and they dry quickly too.
  • A family gift is a great solution to the holiday problem. Just make sure that it will suit their wants. Like for example, if they like to pastries then you can buy them cookies and the likes and if they love to go to the beach, then you can give them unique beach towel or tanning lotion.

In some families you stop when that person has children of their own, then you buy for the child but not the parent.

  • Not sure if I should better ask this in a separate thread...

What shall I buy my wife and ex-partner for Christmas?

We split up this year and live in different cities, but we plan to celebrate Christmas together and with our children. She has sent me a birthday gift and I don't know to buy her for Christmas or if I should better ask her not to exchange presents? Even for our teenage children it must feel like false pretense.
