I don't really understand why you are catering for some allergies but are ignoring the fact that many people choose not to eat gelatine for religious / ethical reasons?

I would have thought that there would be more people who choose not to eat pork products than are allergic to nuts / dairy / gluten. And that's without taking into account the people who would rather their children avoided the artificial colours contained in haribo.

This thread has reminded me of when i was in school, and couldn;t have milk or milk products. Everytime there was a birthday people always brought in chocolate, and i could never have any. But i remember one girl, on her birthday, came up to me with a packet of polos :) so i wasn't left out. :)

Anyway, regarding the haribo, i take it if the school have agreed on it then they don't have anyone vegetarians/muslims/anyone else who cant eat gelatine to cater for? Its not impossible that might be the situation, when i was in school there was only one Sikh child, and a few jeahovahs witnesses so it would never had been as much of an issue back then. Thought that was 20 years ago...

  • Some kids do make a decision at fairly young ages that they don't want to eat meat. You can get gelatine free sweets on the high street easily enough, surely it wouldn't be a massive big deal to buy a selection of sweets with gelatine in and a selection of sweets without.

The availability of veggie options must vary from town to town because Ive never had problems finding any veggie options, vegan as well if you look hard enough.

Id say that schools probably wont think that sweets = gelatine=potential problems, few people think of pork or beef gelatine when they are chewing on a cola bottle.
