Moving from sky broadband to plusnet

Hi, I'm hoping one of you lovely tech folks will be able to help me. I've decided to leave sky for my broadband and line, as the best deal they could offer me was £25.40 a month and plusnet works out at £18.45 or so a month, plus cashback.

My question is this - I have a sky router, will that work with plusnet or do I need to buy their router?

Thanks in advance, and apologies if the answer is obvious, am a total technophobe I'm afraid!

It's not a daft question. It may depend on what Sky router you have - I believe some were 'locked' to Sky, so you couldn't enter other user details for a different provider.
Plusnet 'only' charge £5.99 for their router, and it works fine in my average sized 3 bed house, so it may be worth going for that, knowing it will 'just work' and have a 12 month warranty. Plusnet won't help you with any router issues (beyond the basic settings) if you use another router.
  • Thanks for that - another possibly daft question tho, as it's wireless does that mean I can put it upstairs next to my PC or does it have to be plugged into the phone line?

If you try , you will get a much better desk from Sky. I went from £20.40 to £10 (eventually £7.50 as I renewed tv), after a few calls.

It's a router/modem and needs plugging into the phone line. It generates a (wireless) WiFi signal that means you can connect to it with phones, tablets, and anything else that supports WiFi.
  • Thanks for all your replies, I made several calls to sky and got nowhere, despite my best 'I'm a loyal customer' sales pitch. Luckily I have no loyalty to utility companies I'll just go to the best deal lol x plus, I feel like I'm wasting my money on sky tv, in all I'll be saving about £18 a month by cancelling. Have ordered the plus net router, will plu it in where the old one lives :)

    Thanks again all

  • Plusnet will give you a free router which you swap for the sky one. I think you pay the postage and that is it.

We did the same a few years ago and it was quite painless. We had moved our line to sky too, they tried a few horror stories by saying it could take 2 weeks to transfer but in the end we were off for around 6 hours (if your line is still with BT you will not have this, this was only if you are paying your line rental to sky also).
