you all like pataks - if you only use say a 1/4 of jar, how do you keep the rest of it and for how long. Is it expensive to buy? Thanks

It's normally around £1.50 to buy, although it's often on offer in tesco's for around £1 (as it is currently) so I stock up then. It's just a load of spices in oil so it keeps in the cupboard once it's open. I've never kept it in the fridge, been using it for years (not the same jar, obviously!) and we're all still here to tell the tale. The official advice is .. .. "Store in a cool dry place. Use within six months of opening and before the best before end date."

The empty jars are good for home made jam too!
I like cooking with wine......sometimes I even put it in the food!
  • I'm another member of the Patak's fan club. What I do find though, it that they do benefit from being cooked a little longer that they say on the jar. I find extending the cooking time removes some of the "vinegaryness" that some of them have and give it a much better flavour.

  • sainsburys basics "curry sauce" was 7p at my local sainsburys
:j if my house aint clean enough for you tough
  • No one has mentioned Mayflower curry sauce, very much like chippy/chinese style curry. 99p a box at Morrisons.

We get half a chicken (expect to pay about £1.50 ish), shred the meat off, add it to a fried onion and add the curry sauce (it's made up with water). we also normally add in some sultanas as well but that is so nice. A box would make 2 dinners for 2 people easily.

Another vote for Pataks, we use the Madras paste for making chick pea curry and the rogan josh one for making cous cous (4 espresso cups of dry cous cous, 7 espresso cups of boiling water in a bowl with 2-3 tbsp curry paste, cover for 1/2 hour with cling film or a plate and cool. Run a fork through to separate then add very finely diced red onion and lots of coriander).

    ..

I use this one as well, it is a nice easy standby to have in and tastes delicious. WE have a chicken curry using this once per week. I normally throw in some red peppers as well as the onions.

Am going to try Pataks for a change after reading this thread.

Uncle Ben's sizzle & stir is lovely, and you can occasionally pick that up for £1 a jar. You fry off the chicken (if using raw) in the seperate pot of herbs/oil then stir in the main jar of sauce (I use Korma, so it's a spicy yoghurt). Easily does 2 people.

    Hi torianut,

Double cream works just as well...you just need to add a little less as it's richer.
