CPP refusing to reissue cheque

  • Hi,
    Hopefully someone can help.
My Mum suffers will health issues and she over the years had many CPP Policies which we claimed on. The cheques were sent out to her and because of her illness we only found them and payed them into her bank recently. These were sent back by the bank because they were over six months old. I have written to the CPP administrator and returned the cheques asking for new ones to be re-issued. They have written back saying they don't re-issue cheques and the matter is closed. The amount of compensation Mum was entitled to was a considerable amount. How do I sort this issue, can anybody help please. Many thanks.
  • I suggest you send a similar e-mail to the one above but putting that it was unable to be presented earlier because of ill health. Remind them that FCA Principle 6 requires them to treat customers fairly and that you consider that unless they honour the cheque in these circumstances you will consider that principle to have been breached and refer the matter to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

It would be interesting to know how those who have already complained to CPP have got on.
  • Hi, i have written to CPP and sent the cheques back to them which they kept. Because they sent the cheques to the correct address and the reason they were not cashed was due to human error is the letter you suggested the correct way to go for my mum, its not an address issue. I would be really grateful for your advice. Thank you in advance
  • Hi just wondering if anyone had any success with CPP reissuing their cheque? I applied before the August 2014 deadline and have a cheque dated July 2014 which was sent to a previous address (after I notified them of change of address) only just turned up now (sept 2016). I have paid it in to HSBC today, but after reading these posts I don't have much hope of it going through or even being able to get the cheque reissued :( any success stories?
  • You need to send a formal complaint to complaints@cpp.co.uk that, despite informing them of the new address, they sent it to thc old one.

Tell them that this was their fault and that you want a replacement cheque for the amount on it plus 8% per annum simple interest or you will go to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Make sure you hang on to all of your evidence both of notification of the address change AND of the letter showing the cheque went to the wrong place.

Hi, did anyone have any success in getting their cheques cashed or reissued after the 6 months validity period?
    Thanks
  • This is very interesting. I have found a cheque from September, 2014, which has not been paid in.

    1. Can I re-claim from the bank against which the claim was issued?
    2. If not, what's happened to the money?

I know this is an old thread. Apologies.
  • Can I re-claim from the bank against which the claim was issued?
No, the scheme has ended and the cheques has expired.
If not, what's happened to the money?
    You've lost it.
  • OK, so it's not recoverable, as I thought from reading the thread; however, the most interesting thing is "who's got the money"? I assume, but I don't know, that either the bank still has it, or that CPP has it (although they may no longer exist). If no-one's got it, did it ever exist except conceptually?

This is a technical question, not a "Waaa how do I get it?" one.
  • Yes it existed and it remained in the account of the issuer of the cheque.

The act of cashing the cheque is what transfers the money from their account to yours.
