Best iPhone & iPad bundle for low usage user

Hello all,
I'm hoping for some advice / tips for the best source of an iPhone (I'm not after the most recent iPhone 6 - older will be fine) ... maybe an iPhone 4 ... together with an iPad - again, not necessarily the latest.
The phone is going to be mainly for low usage text & calls.
The iPad will be okay with wi-fi only, not 3G.
Maybe an iPad Mini 2 or Air.
16-64gb is ok.

Can I get some sort of deal / contract of these together that will be better than buying an iPad and getting an iPhone contract separately?
Many thanks in advance.

Don't buy an iPhone 4, the latest software update will render it useless, so there are already many apps you can't use. By the end of your 24 month minimum term it will be an expensive paperweight.

The very minimum you should go for is an iphone5 but again, in two years I imagine these will be pretty sluggish.

You won't get a non 3G iPad on a contract, I don't think. The point of the contract is the data sim that comes with the tablet. I also don't think it will work out cheaper than buying it outright. You'll be lying over the odds for 3G data you don't want or need.

A combined iPad / iPhone contract will be pretty expensive, I imagine £65 or more a month (but that's just a guess) do you really want to commit to this for 24 months?

If you're determined And definitely want to go Apple Id go for a cheap 5c / 5s contract (£22-30 a month?) and buy the iPad outright, if you really want one

The ip4 will only run upto ios7 but yes get a 5.

One of the tv shopping channels are doing iPads reconditioned by apple (old models ) maybe worth a look.

If you qualify for PAYG upgrades, 4s 8Gb is £170 at CPW.
iPad mini 16Gb can be bought for ~£200
    (170+200)/24=~£15 p.m.
    1 minute is 3p on '3' PAYG; 1 text is 2p.

I doubt that you can get both 4s and mini on ~£20 p.m. contract.

Even with 5c for £319 from Apple directly it will be just about £25 p.m.

    Seems a sensible way forward.
Can I get even better deals if I just buy an iPad and choose a different sort of phone for low usage?

    Many thanks. :)

If you don't mind refubs, they can be a bit cheaper in the Apple store. The original Ipad mini (ie the one without touch ID) starts at £170, and Standard retina ipads start at £240. Another place to check is John Lewis, Any return under John Lewis's returns policy get sold in store, My Ipad was from there and £60 off, and to be honest it was like new. Obviously stock varies as its what came back, but you get to see the item you will buy in person and decide there and then.

One thing that is nice in the latest IOS, is the that my phone and Ipad can transfer calls and text between them, so it my phone rings when its on charge in the front room, I can answer the call on the ipad, and it links them by wifi. Similarly I can pass my text messages back and for the (as well as iMessage).
