HI I have an old barclaycard account, not used for years, I have read people getting £50 credit when trying to cancel.
My question is there an optimum number to call for this to happen

I got a Barclaycard 2 months ago, but they only gave me a £250 limit, so I phoned a shortly after and requested they close the account. They gave me £20 to keep it open. I'll give them a call again in a few weeks and ask to close it again and see if they offer a further £20.
It seems to be a hit and miss to whether you get offered anything. Only try t if you genuinely don't want the card anymore, as some people get offered nothing and they just go ahead and close the account.
I phoned their standard customer service number and asked to be put through to cancellation department.0 -
there won't be. you will have to call Customer Services, on any of several numbers. 0800 9177277 will do it.
what is your limit? is it not of any use? you could ask for a Balance Transfer deal, or for the account to be transferred to a Cashback or Rewards account to enable you to use it for spending and derive some benefit from it.
the compensation payments have usually been made when a deal is being changed, with terms less favourable.0 -
I phoned to cancel a card about 5 months ago and instead of being offered money they gave me 12 months interest-free on purchases.
I took the offer, so I don't know if cash would have followed if I had persisted with closing it.0 -
Reason for closing is simply that I dont use it and dont need it
I use other cards for daily use will try that 0800 number, thanks0 -
Common sense would dictate that they'd only offer an incentive if they felt it was worth their while to retain a customer - if it's an old card not in use anymore, why would they pay out to keep that going?0

I'd never used my Barclaycards...ever since the account was transferred from 'Egg Money'...so how many years ago is that!?
Yet they still gave me £50 to keep it open the first time I rang to close it. Then, a few months later, they gave me another £25 to keep it open when I called to close it.0 -
Misleading subject, should read "...£50 credit for not cancelling".0

mmm...i got persuaded to keep mine open and they gave me £30 but I still havent used it apart from the £30 ta very much. I really want a 0% purchase period perhaps its worth asking them again.0
