Fault in Air Delay to destination 24 hours

I flew in August 2010 from Heathrow to Las Vegas, changing at Dallas.
We had a techinical fault in the Air and had to land in New York, After 3 hours the plane was repaired. We then flew on to Dallas delayed and missed my connection to Las Vegas. I was then put into a hotel overnight. I eventually arrived in Las Vegas 24 hours late. American Airlines did pay for the hotel and gave me a transportation voucher for $250 (which i had to fight for), should I try for compensation as I left from an EU airport.
