My wife told me that they had stopped accepting applications from the UK. I thought that this would contravene european law but I am no legal expert.

When you try and sign up here it will only allow German addresses:

    https://www.adac.de/mitgliedschaft/antraege/mitgliedschaft-plusEN.aspx?Param=121000

And, as I say, I just rang them!

Of course I believe you - I just find what you have been told hard to believe.

When I joined they asked me what was the problem with my national club (the AA) so I told them and then gave my details and paid with a credit card.

My monthly magazine is posted to me from somewhere outside London as there are many hundreds if not thousands of UK citizens members of the ADAC,

And yes - that link goes to an on-line application form that will only work with a German postcode and a German bank account.

I'll be very disappointed/annoyed if I cannot renew my membership next year.

As to the question of EU law I would think that rather than making it impossible it would encourage/allow/permit me to join any club in any of the 28 member states.

I will be contacting head office in Munich tomorrow and see what the score is.

My wife reckoned that if you were already a member you could renew but they weren't accepting any new applications from the UK.

    OK - I'm now clearer.

Membership is open to anyone, anywhere in the world.

But they do suggest that maybe you could consider joining a FIA/arc club in your home country - in the UK that means only the AA. Perhaps the AA have complained about losing members to the ADAC - I wouldn't be at all surprised.

The ADAC website on-line membership application gizmo page doesn't understand any non-German postcodes and non-German bank codes etc for setting up a DD, so you can't use that.

But you can speak to an English speaking ADAC rep and give them your UK address and pay by credit card.

Don't try using any of the freefone German numbers - they don't work from the UK.

Thanks for your help Iceweasel - will try again tomorrow!
  • I've been a member of ADAC for several years - fortunately never had to put them to the test!

I was in my local shopping centre last week and when walking past the semi-permanent AA stand was approached about breakdown cover.

I advised that I was with ADAC at a cost considerably less than the AA at which the AA man said "I'd stick with them if I were you while you can" perhaps it was just scare tactics or something else is afoot.

My ADAC monthly magazine just arrived this morning.

All the UK members mags are posted from the ADAC mail-centre in Slough.

In an earlier post I said from 'somewhere outside London'.

Not an error I suppose - but it's a long walk from Slough to London.

    :D

Done! Had to ring 00 49 800 5 10 11 12 and ask for an English speaker but everyone was so nice.

Chap I spoke to was called a 'Music Man' (?) and spoke perfect English and was extremely helpful. Took my name and address and is sending everything out in the post including a credit card form to fill out and return.

    Thanks again Iceweasel!

Firstly, a big thank you to Iceweasel for being so helpful.

I had actually considered ADAC a couple of years ago, prior to a trip to Europe. In the end I opted for EuroAssistance.

As far as ADAC, would it therefore be wise for anybody travelling overseas just to pick them, rather than the expensive UK options.

I'll not be going abroad next year, so will be buying Autoaid shortly.

I'd say so. I rang RAC who provide my UK cover and they wanted several hundreds pounds to cover me for the five months in I'm France.
