What do you clean your cat's litter tray with?

We use non-clumping litter so need to clean the tray once a week. What do you use?

Online guides suggest washing up liquid. I seem to remember the lady I got kitty from said she used to use bio washing powder. One breeder's website said bleach, but I can't imagine kitty would like that smell!

Do you also all wear face-masks when you tip the old litter out? That's what the guides said but wondered if that's OTT?

I use a tiny bit of washing up liquid and lots of hot water, with one of those scrubby sponge things (sure there's a proper name for them somewhere).

I've never used a mask personally but it can be recommended when TTC. If it's going to put your mind at ease it might be worth trying.

Our vet says you can get a good clean using just washing up liquid...I was told that the smell of bleach to the cat will make it seem like the amonia in wee, that may encourage them to use the tray, but it can also discourage fussy ones who smell it thinking the litter tray has not been cleaned!

In our house thats a "blue" job so I dont need to use a mask...train them early and you wont need to bother with a mask!!

Thanks - I wondered if washing up liquid would really kill bugs, but if vets say it's OK that's good enough for me. :) Not keen on the smell of bleach myself!

Dash of bleach and a tiny drop of Fairy Liquid. Boiling water and then rinse with boiling water, let dry.

No masks, do wear an old pair of rubber gloves though.

Bleach and hot water. My cats love bleach! If I've been wiping worktops with a spray with bleach in it, they love rubbing against my hands even when I've washed them.

I use bleach on the utility room floor tiles where the litter tray is kept. After the floor is dry my little tabby will roll on the floor for ages revelling in the smell.

Little furry weirdoes. Gotta love 'em.

I use litter tray liners, then it rarely needs cleaning. Most of the pound or 99p stores sell boxes of them.
Thank-you to everyone who posts comps
