Cheapest decent speed unlimited ADSL package

Hi there, long time lurker, first time poster. I'll be moving into my student accommodation in a few weeksa time and need to sort out a broadband package. I'm not in a cabled area unfortunatly, so have to go down the ADSL route. I've looked around a bit and seen the Virgin £17.99/month package (upto 8mb unlimited).

This is going to be used by 11 people (big house), so its going to need a decent speed (8mb or more) and needs to be unlimited (or as close as possible).

Any help greatly appreciated,
Rich

11 people sharing one connection - thats going to be one big ugly mess... yes it's possible, but the overal speed that everyone in the house will get will be lower, especially if everyone uses it at the same etc etc - more so if you all do P2P ... you may be better of having two landlines and getting two broadband connections - would be better than 11 saring one connection thats for sure

I strongly advise you to go to www.samknows.com - and type in the phone number of where you will be living, then tell us the maximum speed, and LLU providers you can get. The vast majority of ISPs use ADSL Max, and unless you live near the phone exchange, you will not get anything more than 3/4Mb - and sharing that between 11 will be much worse!
  • so long as it's better than dial up i'll be happy (only downloading will be done at night).

I checked the sam knows site and it says that adsl and adsl max are available (no llu operators), and that i'm around 500m from the exchange.

My postcode wil be sy23 1ln if that helps you in anyway.

    Thanks,
    Rich

  • all of those packages mentioned seem to have pretty low download limits (bar talk talk). I need an unlimited or at least a pretty high package.

The article does cover it.MSE Martin says.

"If you want unlimited download limits then for £14.99 a month Tiscali* offers up to a 2MB unlimited broadband package. Though it should be noted that annoyingly unlimited doesn’t really mean that, as like all providers it has a ‘fair usage’ policy, which means if you really do download things constantly it may invoke this clause, yet you’d need to be using really serious amounts for that to happen."

    8mb is £17.99 a month. http://www.tiscali.co.uk/products/broadband/home-broadband.html?code=ZZ-NL-12LG

BT says 15.5mb? BT wholesale's network cannot go higher than ADSL Max's 8mb (7.1mb in reality) - so take that with a pinch of salt.

I'd avoid Tiscali and TalkTalk (due to poor customer service, speed, billing, etc etc) - but i'd recommend Zaggle .. see my post here -> http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=5818439&postcount=2
