upgraded with tesco, faulty phone can I get out of my contract

Afraid to say they do sometimes esp. from Tesco, so the story does add up. Perhaps you should be sure of your facts before you go slagging off a poster and making an idiot of yourself.
Well if it comes with a sim already installed then it's not a "brand new" phone, is it? At the very least it's been opened by the network provider who installed the sim.
Also, if this was the case why would the OP be asked to "open the sim tray" during set up? Surely you'd just switch the phone on and off you go?
In any case, I hardly slagged off a poster. I just said the story didn't add up - the fact that tesco agreed to a one off repair as a "goodwill gesture" suggests that too. Yes, I also had a go for the childish comments, but again hardly "slagging" someone off. Seriously though, we all know there's more to this tale than what's been said so far!0 -

The idea is you can turn the phone on without activating the sim unless you remove the insulation strip.

The OP was instructed to pull out the yellow insulation strip which is there to isolate the sim fro the contacts, rather like when you buy your toys that have batteries fitted with insulation strips.
Yes, that's what I'd assumed, but the OP said "I have to pull a yellow strip out of the sim tray to open the sim tray"....which is why I questioned why you'd need to open the SIM tray at all. That part doesn't seem necessary at all.
Calling me an idiot and pathetic is hardly called for, but at least it gives me an idea of the sort of person I'm conversing with. I may be completely wrong in my assumptions but at least I haven't resorted to name calling.0 -
On the 930 the new unit comes with a yellow tab stuck on the sim carrier to help remove it initially. once the carrier is removed the tab is discarded and the sim placed in the carrier before being reinserted into the phone. The tab is adhesive and is secured to the back of the sim carrier so not the same as the plastic non adhesive tabs that are used to isolate connections on other devices and toys.

If it came with the sim inserted and the tab still on then there is definitely an issue there as the carrier would have had to be forced in and be a very tight fit. Removing the sim carrier once jammed will likely cause it to break.
People have left the tab on before, in case they don't like the phone with the possible option of doing a reset and returning as unused. Not saying that's the case here, but does happen.0
