Advice needed on disputed Vodafone debt

Long story short.. I've closed an account early with Vodafone in September paying an amount I was advised with a call centre advisor. Now been sent a bill for further £80. Have disputed this in writing - poor reply received which doesn't explain the discrepancies i've detaied to them. And also receiving threats in parallel from accounts team that debt will be passed as a bad debt to credit reference agency. Should I pay and try and claim back through complaints process and ombudsman? Is there any way I can halt or challenge the legality of them claiming its a bad debt. I'm convinced its their error.
