M62 variable speed limit cameras

I was on the M62 on Tuesday and yesterday going to and from Manchester through a section of variable speed limit gantries. The signs weren't lit up so I take it there was no variable speed and that the NSL of 70 applied?

I did 60mph through them all as that seemed like the speed the traffic was going. Am I safe?

Been reading up and I hear they still have variable speeds even when they are not lit up.

How can they tell you what they have reduced/varied the speed to if the gantry signs are not lit up showing it?

Speed needs a red ring around it to be enforceable I thought.
  • Everyone seemed to be doing 60 or under when it wasn't even that busy so had me thinking they knew something I didn't.

I think that because the users have been accustomed to the lower limits during the roadworks to install the system they have now been 'brainwashed' into driving at a lower speed. Give them time for the effects to wear off and the will be back to the normal 70+

Correct and even in the right font it would appear.

Speed limits are a right hodgepodge going Manchester-Leeds.

There are roadworks outside Manchester where iirc it's 50mph.
    Then back up to 70mph.
Then you hit the managed motorway section around Huddersfield where the overhead gantries light if the speed limit is lower than NSL.

If it's busy then you get lorries playing overtake so two lanes are down at 60mph anyway.

If the gantries are not lit, the speed limit has reverted to 70mph, (NSL) that is the default!

It would be a funny old world if variable speed limits were reduced and they didn't tell you about it. The variable speed limit only applies if it is properly indicated and from the point of indication, otherwise the normal speed limit applies for that road, which would be the 70mph. Also, my pal in West Yorkshire police told me that the speed cameras are only activated when there is a variable speed limit indicated, so not on when it's the normal 70mph - but not sure if he knows that, or if somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody told him.

I saw a car get flashed on the opposite side as I was going down. So obviously still flashing if you go over the NSL by whatever margin. Which seems to be confirmed in various news articles.
