MSE Tariff Comparisons

I have just had my energy comparison completed by MSE and I am very disappointed. The result shows that I can save £327 per year. BUT they have done the comparison with a mixture of the current tariff I am on (7 months to end of contract) and 5 months on a Standard tariff. WHAT IS THE POINT OF THAT? At the end of my contract I will obviously seek a new deal. MSE must compare like for like. It is outrageous to mix the two tariffs and then say I will save money. Its verging on the ridiculous and amounts to misrepresentation. A better comparison would be 7 months on my tariff with 7 months of an alternative supplier.
My other gripe is that I cannot send a direct e-mail to the people who run this MSE website. WHY NOT? Full contact details should be shown, with telephone numbers and address. Are you trying to hide away?
Regards,
Stulynn

That is mandated by Ofgem. Letters of complaint should be sent to them, not the comparison sites. All comparisons under its code must do this. However MSE and others do offer the additional raw costs if you look carefully.

The costs of the new plans, if your annual usage is reasonable, will be accurate as to the order they are displayed, that is in order of price. It is just the savings figure and whether you want to switch now that requires attention.
  • The USwitch site gave 2 figures, current annual spent and what it would be on the standard rate after the current deal ends. This is set out very clearly in bold. So possibly not OFgem.
My understanding of the MSE deal is that it has negotiated better deals than can be obtained from the supplier direct. Not what I found with E.on.
    MSE should clarify.
  • This probably answers my point on the thread above. I couldn't see how I was benefitting from the rates given as they were more than I am paying. This must be the answer. It's not that you'll save against the rate you are on now, it's that you would save buy making this switch compared with if you moved to a rubbish deal! LOL

All comparison sites compare the cost over a 12 month period.
I don't understand why you want it over 14 months? Huh:
As for the method of calculation, this is stipulated by Ofgem for all accredited comparison sites, but MSE does have some sympathy with you about this

The Cheap Energy Club is an online tool provided by MSE.
Why do you feel the need to email or phone them?

There's an online contact form you can use if you do find you are having an issue with the CEC

If you want to write to MSE, their address is given in the terms & conditions

I don't think there is any attempt to 'hide away' as you put it.

The MSE collective tariffs are unique tariffs only available via the CEC

They are allegedly the cheapest on average (regions, consumption, etc), not necessarily for everyone and their own personal circumstances.
However, as they are only available via the CEC, which is also a comparison service, you will be able to see if it's the best deal for you :)

It was when the article was written, but has been recently superseded as the cheapest.

We appreciate this. It is the mixing of deal and standard rates that is not highlighted, cf USwitch.
Footguy,"As for the method of calculation, this is stipulated by Ofgem"
Regulators these days concern themselves with the the broad framework, and unhelpfully don't set out how the information is presented. Result, the headline savings are misleading, as Stalynn says, "At the end of my contract I will obviously seek a new deal."
None looking at these sites is going to stay on the standard rate and providers generally offer a new deal towards the end of the current deal
Footguy,"The MSE collective tariffs are unique tariffs only available via the CEC"
Really, look at E.on, unique because one of the rates is more than E.on offer directly.
Finally on the right of the screen we are told it is the last chance for the MSE big winter switch. So what?
I note there is no "Official" response to this thread of observations.

You probably won't get an "Offiicial" response by posting on this site.

Martin has given up posting on here ages ago.
Try twitter if you want to try and catch him ;)

Can I just ask, the energy club comparison says I can save £92 a year switching to Eon, but when I look at the price per kWh unit and standing charge per day, both are higher with Eon than with my current npower tarriff, so I don't see where these savings are coming from?
