MSE Tariff Comparisons

  • I phoned up Eon today because I wanted to discuss my tariff. I told them Ihad seen a better deal but because I am on Eon energy 18 I would need to changemy meter. So I have been told. This is because I have underfloor heating, recovery system, bla bla. I have two meters basically.

However, Eon came up as saving me about £125 a year, and when I asked fortheir best deal directly, they actually quoted the same standing charge andunit rates as per the energy comparison.

They base calculations on the ridiculous assumption that you would otherwise go onto your present supplier's standard tariff.

npower's November 2015 online fix is very competitive and has no early release charge and , should the new December fix prove better, you can move over very easily.

Just posted about this on your other thread leeruddecology. Here's the link.

Quite right, OP, it's pointless. I posted this earlier on another thread before I saw this one:-

Unfortunately, the Cheap Energy Club comparison tool is fatally flawed for anybody that is already on a fixed-term tariff.

I saw that I had a projected saving of £211 a year on my present npower tariff, fixed till Aug 15, so I looked at the figures. But they didn't make sense, so I did the sums myself.

Instead of saving over £17.50 a month as claimed, I would in fact only have been saving £6 a month. The reason for this is that, if you are on a fixed tariff, the tool makes the assumption that, after the fix ends, you will accept being put onto you current provider's 'standard tariff'. This makes an enormous difference and distorts the result completely. However, as we are obviously all MoneySavers, none of us will do that and we will use a comparison tool when the fix ends and select a better tariff, quite possibly even cheaper than the current 'cheapest' tariff.

To produce an effective comparison, the tool should compare your current monthly rate with the current monthly rate of other tariffs. It is pointless using an invented figure for future months to produce a valid comparison at this point in time.

In the meantime, I will stick with my spreadsheet for a realistic idea of any savings.

And, of course, they don't even know what your present supplier's 'standard tariff' will be when your fix finishes months hence. So why quote prices that are plainly fictitious? Ludicrous.
  • Comparisons of tariff that include (remaining deal rate + remainder of 12 month period @ std rate) Vs (new rate for 12 month) are seriously misleading. The MSE comparisons seem to work along the same lines as the energy companies provide so at least you have consistency... (legislation I assume) Unfortunately being told you can save money when in actual fact you will be paying more per kWh is to me out of order!
Obviously the earlier you switch the more you will have 'lost' as long as the new tariff at that time isn't lower than you are paying now (fat chance!)
I for now will also stick with a spreadsheet to compare real gains... Shame the providers don't have cost / kWh & standing charges more to the fore in their promotional material

Energyhelpline.com provide the option to choose 'standard results' instead of 'weighted results' (the latter 'weights' the estimate by adding the extra months at standard tariff rates).

As this is more helpful than the MSE site, I chose to change via their site and let them earn the commission.
