Not much to recommend at the moment.
I would suggest to refurb what you have now. You write that he has 2 x 512MB now and one is not working. So that would suggest to me that you are running Vista on 512 MB of RAM. That won't make for a joyful experience.
Did anyone consider swapping the the 512MB module for one of 1GB, in the working slot?
You need to get the machine in your hands. That way, we can check which version of firmware is installed and update it if necessary.
That alone may solve the issue.BIOS V. 1.10:
Solved problems:
- Password will be cleared after upgrade /downgrade BIOS.
- The brightness can not be kept which was set by user when plug in/plug out the
AC on DOS mode and XP OS.
- System will hang up if LIVEVIEW Express card was hot plugged after resume from
stand by
- The system can not be boot up randomly. when the system plug Hynix 1G x2
memories,
- If ODD string is too long then it will be cut in "Boot menu".(NEC AD-7540A)
- After press F12 in post screen will not show waiting
- If DDR2 800Mhz was used by end user on the units ,the behavior will be
downgrade as the same as DDR2 667Mhz.
Known errors, problems and restrictions:
- the M470T2953EZ3-CE6(lower socket)+ HYMP564S64CP6-Y5 (upper socket)
combination will occure bluescreen and LCD showing black screen and power led
on after reboot.
It should at worst recognise 1GB of RAM. We can run a clean install of the OS without any bloatware.
The machine will certainly run better than it is now....for a maximum outlay of £8.99 for 2x1GB of DDR2 667 MHz PC2-5300 RAM
But best you have the machine to hand, so that I can guide you through the process.0 -

This was after another guy (very good, but sadly too unreliable to wait for) had tried similar.
In all honesty, I don't remember what either of them did, sorry.NiftyDigits wrote: »But best you have the machine to hand, so that I can guide you through the process.
You busy then??0 -
You are indeed correct, but he is a patient man
It was over a year ago that it was 'in the shop' and the guy there tried several options to no avail.

I'm away at the moment, back next week and could probably get it on Friday lunch time.

Have no idea. we'll see. Back up his important data in the meanwhile, as we'll likely run a clean install of the operating system.
Have an empty USB flash drive at hand(a small capacity model will do) for the BIOS update and a couple of blank DVDs for the OS install. If you don't mind taking a risk, order the RAM in my link now, it's only £8.99.
That way we can just get on with it once you have the machine, rather than having to keep it for days before you can do anything.0 -
Nifty - just had a word with 'Granddad' and he says he would prefer a newer machine.
Many thanks for your kind offer, but ................ :beer:
Sorry0 -
He can have both. At least he'll have a fallback position for as little as £8.99.0

OK
The £8.99 has got him interested
I've seen the machine and noted the following:-
From CCLeaner:-
Win Vista Business 32 Bit
Intel CPU T2130@1.8GHz
756MB RAM
SiS Mirage 3 Graphics
From the BIOS
Version = V1.10-37214a-V58
BIOS Date = 11/30/2007
Product = Esptimo Mobile V5515
System Memory = 633 KB
Extended Memory = 1831936 KB
Type = Genuine Intel (R) CPU T2130@1.86GHz
Speed = 1.86GHz
Do we need any more info?
I don't think there is much cr4p on there, he always asks me before installing anything!!!0 -

So, it is clear that both of the modules are being recognised.
2 x 512MB = 1024 MB(1GB) Take away the 256 MB reserved for graphics and that leaves you with 768 MB.
This needs to be increased. Did you buy the RAM?
Next, we are going to refresh the BIOS. Do you have an empty USB Flash drive at hand?0
