First smartphone for parent

My dad finally wants to upgrade his Nokia 3510, it has lasted over 10 years but I think he wants more features now.

In my opinion the iPhone will be the easiest for him to learn to use. So that is what I suggested, I am looking around at prices now but are there any other phones known for their ease of use?

How is his eyesight? I'm assuming he's an older gentleman, sorry if not. The iphone has a tiny screen compared to it's rivals. I would guess the Windows phones are easiest for anyone new to smartphones, the icons are large and simple.

Moto G at the budget end .
Does he want to spend a large amount of money on an IPhone . Will he use all the capabilities of an IPhone/ high end smartphone ??
  • He will probably use it for emails, browsing, taking photos, checking the weather and things like that but not really games or watching videos.

You are right about the screen size though, bigger would be better.

I will have a look at the phones you mentioned, thanks.

The tale that iPhones 'just work', doesn't wash with me

For someone with no experience of a smart-phone, I don't think it matters a stuff.

Get him to look at a few in a shop, preferably without a pushy salesperson looking down on you.
No point in spending £4/500 when you can get something for half that which you still *may* not be able to understand!! ;)

That's true. Learning to use the Moto G (which is what he will probably go for) will be easy enough, especially with me as a teacher! :)

I think you then answered your own question! :)

Depending on intended use, there is the issue of how he would feel about having a large modern phone in his pocket. The jump in size from what he is used to could be an issue I'd have thought?
