What's the hardest game you've ever played?

So modern games really have to be considered as a different prospect. Now with increased technology, you don't just play it, you can live it, experience it as an extension of your time.
Hardest modern games I've known...
Assassins Creed 1 - the original. Main reason though was because the mechanics were a bit broken, something they've improved on. The last three boss fights had definite issues. Not impossible but beware of flying controllers.
Sleeping Dogs - now this one, most people found it difficult, insanely difficult in fact at first, but if you could get a quarter of the way through, it got too easy. Some people though just "got" the fighting technique right away and found it an easy game.
GTA 4 - many people would say "you what" at this, but I'll explain. The missions were easy, with the exception of driving ones involving chasing. The driving mechanics had issues, so it was difficult to drive at speed. Have a mission where you had to ram someone off the road, and...............you better be very very good or lucky. Add to this, the maps were hard to follow, so the one you were supposed to be chasing, you just couldn't tell half the time where he'd gone.
If that isn't bad enough, a mission would often involve...get a car, drive to x location, change car, steal a police car by phoning for police, lose the police chase, drive to x other location, find Mr x......oh he's ran off, give chase (By this time 20 minutes have passed), then he drives up one road, you can't tell what road it was because the maps are rubbish, you try turn down a road, the car doesn't handle, you crash it or someone gets in the way.........oh you've lost him, mission failed, try again.........and you're back outside your bloody apartment 25 minutes lost and you have to do all that all over again!
Get bleeped! Got a life stuff this game where the sun doesn't shine!0 -

A beautiful game, the music was FANTASTIC but when those bad guys pinched your instrument from you it was pure panic, chaos and often death.0 -
Monkey island the original one, remember it taking me almost a year to complete.
There was a bit where you fell off a ledge and it said hope you have saved..... then guybrush bounced up and said rubber tree, that bit nearly saw me off and would of if he hadn't come back up0 -
Any of the Dizzy Games on the Commodore0

I remember struggling on a Medal of Honour game, the last level.
They literally chucked the kitchen sink at you, i'm not sure if i ever managed to finish it.0 -
It would have to have been one of my commodore 64 games. so many of them were just broken -- take Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles for instance. You had 4 lives to get through the whole game, and Shredder was a bullet-hell boss who dished out one-hit kills.
Or perhaps Shadow Dancer or Toki on the megadrive. Both pure evil.
But in recent memory, I'd say Ikaruga simply because I was old enough to know better, and still can't beat the fourth boss.0 -
I'll agree with everyone saying those old games were way harder than modern ones. There's so called "hardcore" middle aged gamers who whinge about how things now have been dumbed down for the "casuals" (In other words, people with a life), but this is failing to see the reason. The real reason is that the graphics were bad, the content was basic, the storyline was very basic - because the graphics and technology just wasn't there - so the only way to go was to make basically very short games, but ones which would take ages to complete because they were so insanely hard.
So, the original Dizzy game was brutal. I could never get past a level on a Commodore 64 age game called Batman (Not the one based around the dark movie).
Are you talking about the one based on the adam west series that had two scenarios -- something in the police station, and rescuing robin from a coastal hideout?
Because I completed both when I was 5 or 6 XD. Took a few goes, but once you worked out that you couldn't kill enemies, only stun them, and timed your attacks accordingly, it wasn't too bad. And the puzzles were quite simple if you stopped to think (well I think they were, I mean, I was a kid at the time).
Really fun game actually, one of my favorites of the C64.0 -
