Best internet security to buy or download??!!

This follows hot on the heel of my eviction thread.
I will probably need to get new Internet Security on my laptop and my son's at some point in next couple of weeks as the Virgin freebie has run out.
Is there one that people would recommend to download, for the simple-minded!?? There are quite a few around, and I have no idea which one to choose. I've heard Norton isn't great, but that's about it.
I don't know how much better paid-for ones are compared to free ones, either?
Any recommendation gratefully received.

Would recommend using Avast. It's a free download and easy to set-up.0

Do you need antivirus or internet security suite??
Most (if not all) free downloads will be "antivirus" and not "Internet security suite" software(s) - be it AVG, Panda, Avast, etc.
If you have a Barclays bank account account and registered for online banking then you will get Kaspersky Internet security suite for free (can be used on 3 devices). I've been using it for quite some time now and renew for free every year, thanks to Barclays offer.
If looking for just antivirus software, download any of the free ones - Avast, AVG, Panda, etc.
But if you specifically need "Internet Security Suite", then you'll need to pay for subscription. Avast and Kaspersky are the two I would recommend, based on my experience.0 -
Best is subjective and you will get many opinions .
But best to me means long term very high ranking in AV comparatives test and that means Kaspersky or Eset .0 -
Very helpful thank you.
The only other aspect as I would want Parental Controls, can you get that free too? Maybe I should ask in Techie stuff?0 -
AVG have a Family Safety product. Never used it myself though.
There is also K9 Web Protection which is just for parental controls (not an anti-virus).
But for just anti-virus, I personally use Avast! and have for years, but for work we deploy AVG.
Trend is also not bad.
Normally I would say the "internet security" is a waste of money, but if you have children accessing the web then it might be worthwhile.0 -

Thank you all very much. Its very hard to understand all this also, if you are not a particularly PC-literate parent.
So many thanks again for taking your time to reply.0 -
I am using K7 total security, a paid antivirus soft ware. It works well for me.0
