Thanks for the quick reply. Quite stressed out about this, obviously.

Total amount used is 4782. I gave him a reading, and he used a reading that was on the tenancy agreement from when I moved in. I don't think the units are off, but... I don't know?! It makes no sense!

Are you sure that you are reading this meter correctly?

Turn of your supply at the fuse box you have and see what else stops working, then you will know what you actually are paying for..

Did the opening reading (from the tenancy agreement) match what you moved into? or was it the closing reading from the last tenant - with continued communal usage in between which is affecting your first bill?

It seems like the meter isn't being unreasonable, but going from around £7 a week electric use in my old place (I know you said it is irrelevant but it must be some kind of gage) to £26 a week is mental.
    Something is a miss.

You said you are frugal, which seems to be the case based on what you have said. To put your usage into perspective, I am also frugal and my family's usage for the past week worked out at 5.7 units a day.

This is in a 3 bedroom house with two adults and a 5 year old.
That's close to 20kWh/day less than you.

JC, like Istar, I live in a 3 bed house (mid terrace for me) and we pay a monthly bill of £83 for gas and electric, and electric is about £30, on a capped rate. Don't recall the unit cost, but we aren't particularly frugal with the electric, more with the gas heating, but £26 per week seems far too high for a flat.
Suspect either the move in reading was wrong, which you could check based on the 6 monthly reading and subsequent readings (i.e. what is the reading from month 6 to 7 - although that will be seasonal). If the readings look about right, then you may be running something that you aren't aware of .
One thing that puzzled me - why does the landlord give you a bill based on the bill he gets from Eon? Surely your bill should just be based on what your meter reading says times the unit cost. According to ukpower.co.uk the average unit costs are between 9-11p plus vat and then there's standing charges, so your quoted rate sounds ok.

I believe so. It has six numbers, the last one being in red. Although who knows, I'll ask the landlord. I can't post a pic as I don't have a mobile phone.

I don't remember the reading from when I moved in, but it says on the tenancy agreement that it was taken two weeks before I moved in.

It is a small place, and I really am frugal. When I stop watching TV I unplug it. When my laptop is fully charged I unplug that and use the battery for an hour. I take the batteries out of my remote when I'm not using it :) I checked the units the last ten days and it worked out twenty units a day, which is eight less than the average of the six months on my bill, but still seems too high. I don't think anything is being left on, like I said earlier in the thread, I've checked the overnight consumption when only the fridge/electric gate/alarm is on and it uses one unit. I don't know why he bills me, I suppose as he knows the price per unit. But it was pretty straightforward; the amount it said on my unit, minus the amount it said when I moved in, so doesn't seem anything underhanded.

Twenty units per day in a flat is a lot. I have an OWL energy monitor, and in my 4- bedroom semi with 2 freezers, a fridge, 3 PCs on all day, heaven only knows what chargers plugged in which shouldn't be, then I average 12 units per day. Electricity meters count in KwH. Only the black numbers are KwH. The red one is tenths of KwH, so don't involve that one in your calculations.

Don't count the red one, that is tenths of a kWh.

Yeah, it's still too high. 20kWh would be high for a wasteful person in your position, for a frugal person it's crazy.

Are you sure there isn't an appliance you are forgetting?

Is your hot water provided by gas?
Is there an immersion heater that may be on by mistake?
Do you have an electric shower?
Do you have old fridges or freezers?
Do you have a really old washing machine?
Do you have a tumble dryer?
Do you have 1000W light bulbs? :D

    Thanks for your input, everyone.

    Jbuchanangb and Istar

Even if you deduct the red number it still works out at twenty units a day, too high, or am I adding it up wrongly? In truth I shouldn't be adding anything, it should be my landlord.

I really don't think there is anything on. Like I say, during the night one tenth of a unit is used, in about eight hours, surely if something was on it would be a lot more?

Hot water is gas. I switch the boiler off when I don't use it :rotfl:
I don't believe there is an immersion heater. All I believe I have is a normal gas boiler, I definitely don't get hot water when the boiler is off!
Not an electric shower, just a normal. Fridge and oven could be old, they do look it. But my fridge has barely more than milk in it most the time (single young guy here) :) Washing machine could be old but doesn't seem too bad. I run the washing machine rarely, maybe twice a month anyway. No tumble dryer. Lights aren't too bright :) Do have a ridiculous set up in the kitchen where there is six lights that come on on the one switch, but I stopped using that straight away when I moved in.

Just checked my consumption for today, sixteen units (including the red number?) since ten in the morning until seven at night. This is my electric use broken down today:

Two hours on a laptop plugged in to mains, four hours on the internet (router) TV on for one hour, central heating used for total of thirty minutes, small Tinnitus sound masker used for maybe two hours, oven on for fifteen minutes, something simmered on stove for fifteen minutes. kettle boiled for total of couple of minutes.

  • Hi JC1440 I can appreciate your situation. I moved into a 2 bed flat thissummer, having been in a flat where the electricity use was billed at a flatrate, regardless of use. Since I now pay for every unit, I am super frugal.

I turn off everything that is possible when not in use, including therouter! The heating hasn’t even come on yet. I also only have electricity.

So, my bills for the past six months since April have been between £28 and£32 a month! I do live alone and work so I am not in too much. I do use mywashing machine slightly more than you, with 2-3 loads a week during the nighttime.

I do have a heat recovery system which might mean my hot water is cheaperthan having a gas boiler?

Also, I assume your remembering that you have a standing charge to pay? Ipay 29p a day Lon my Eon energy 18 plan.
