More and more retailers are introducing charges on returns, people ordering loads and then returning it (sometimes worn), particularly when they use sites like Klarna so they don't actually have to pay, costs the retailers a fortune.  The costs of processing a return are around 2/3rds of the price of a product.  A lot of returns just get burnt or landfilled too, so it's bad environmentally.

As ever, the misbehaviour by a minority ruins it for all of us who just want to return the odd item that doesn't fit right.

    Blimey, that's dire.

I thought about this too when it was mentioned.  I don't mind paying return postage as I do tend to order a couple of sizes - I much prefer to order online than have to trek to and round the shops, so it's fair enough.  But that's literally trying on, refolding and back in the bag, sometimes not even out of the bag if it turns out I don't like the colour or print.
I'd be surprised if return costs really add up to 2/3 of the price of the product though, surely that depends on what price point you're buying.  A few quid return courier, say an hour of sorting and admin at reasonable wage plus overheads, then cost of resending?  But I suppose I tend to buy dresses and jeans at kind of top of the high street prices, so my per item spends are high and I get a lot of plain tops etc second hand.
I do think companies should start to refuse or discount refunds if they are really getting stuff returned in poor condition, it might make more difference to that minority.

It's a figure I've seen quoted, but yes it probably depends on the price of the item.   https://theconversation.com/fast-fashion-why-your-online-returns-may-end-up-in-landfill-and-what-can-be-done-about-it-188090
