Beanie when my mum was 80 we were just having a buffet for immediate family and a birthday cake . Covid scuppered that though . Is your mum wanting a big party inviting friends etc?Life is an adventure, never stop exploring.4

Surely your mother of all people understands the financial pressure you are under. Do enough but nothing more. You can’t go into debt to say “Look, I love you”.
As for commenting on your weight. Is she modelling herself on my family. Still remember my uncle turning up on the doorstep and commenting “You’ve kept the weight off. That’s good, for you I mean”. This is not the sort of help you need from parents, especially not at Christmas!
You are wonderful Beanie. Not perfect but wonderful xxDebt LBM (08/09) £11,641. DEBT FREE APRIL 2021.

Thank you all SO much.
Family dynamics are weird.
There is only me up here really. DS does not have a scooby & will turn up as expected. His GF will do the same as it's not for her.
My maw see this as her last hurrah.

Mothers are not the most tactful of people. Many years ago I took a photo of my friend and I in our fake fur coats on our way to a night out (this was the 80s and they were very fashionable at the time). My mum said we looked liked a pair of prostitutes 😱 She was also convinced I was going to end up murdered because I attracted weird stalker lads 😱I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)5

Dearest Beanielou
those vouchers have gone in a safe place. Hopefully if you can distract yourself and stop thinking about them - the safe place will make itself known - the more you think about it - the more the place will hide itself.
hooe tomorrow is better
ps although I have had to organise aged Ps big birthday parties - he has paid !!!As a dear MSE friend says “keep plodding” or
What does the saying say.... When life hands you lemons, make lemonade
Or as my Mum would say, brush yourself down, tomorrow is another day or
Fake it, to you Make It
Please say hello my new diary: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6578460/still-dancing-to-blow-the-debt-clouds-away4 -
I am sure the vouchers will show up.
Cup cakes..... can you make them spell out Mum or happy birthday? or whatever age she is?
You could maybe buy different varieties?
Do you have pound stretcher? or Home bargains? they do good party stuff that doesn't cost a fortune. Also The big river shop - the stuff I got for Christmas was good, the favours I got the kids? do some fancy napkins and some plain. White tablecloths are normally the cheapest?
I would see if there is anything silver reduced from Christmas stuff? or white?
XXNevertheless she persisted.5
