If you have an idea of what city they're living in you could look up their address in the electoral roll. There should be one in the library or you can do it online.

If you don't know any details of where they might be the Salvation Army does a people finding service.

Did they always buy a particular national daily newspaper? Most of them have a 'looking for' section.

Otherwise, would a friend of a friend of a friend still know where they were, perhaps pop a little note into every Christmas card you will be sending this year, if you haven't found them by that time.

what did they do for a living (if you knew them as an adult) - perhaps there is a professional body you could try to contact? Or an old school that might know of them?
Do you know if they have kids and if so do you know what their names are (thinking you could try facebook / myspace etc to get hold of them!)?
Do you know any names of siblings/parents etc, or where they grew up, could be a roundabout way to find them?

What part of the country did Peter live when you were last in contact with him.

It appears there's a "P Chittock" who has something to do with Benfleet Running Club. Essex I think that is. Is this any help?

This P Chittock ran the Billericay 10K in 48.3 seconds and came 184th. Does it sound like your friend?
