Montly Bank Account Charge

Hi, I have been looking for information on the possibility of re-claiming the £25 a month fee for a Lloyds Platinum Account.
I read something about this in the press lately and wonder if there is a set procedure for this.
Briefly, I applied in person to open a Lloyds current account in 2009. I was immediately told that the platinum account was best suited to my needs.
Since June 2009 I have paid £25 per month and am still paying.
I use the free overdraft most months, always paying off in full at least once a month, have used the mobile phone insurance once, and AA cover a few times (only allowed 3 callouts a year anyway).
I recently started looking around to change accounts as finances were getting tighter and noticed that a Lloyds Platinum Account now costs £17 per month.
I queried this by letter with my Bank Manager and was told in writing that as I applied in November 2010 by phone to convert to this account, and was given an introductory offer of £17 for 2 months, nothing was wrong with their charges.
Can anyone give me some guidance as to whether and if, I could try and claim these charges back, and what should I do now - I would like to keep the overdraft facility, but that is all, bank are being very obstructive with me at the moment, (a whole other story)!.

You certainly can't complain that you don't use any of the benefits associated with the account!0 -

You can only attempt to reclaim if you believe it was mis-sold.

If you don't want to continue paying monthly fees, downgrade to a Lloyds account without any monthly fees, such as their classic account or possibly their club account if you can meet the requirements to not pay the monthly fee.0 -
Yes, it's their bank they can accept whoever they want (racism/sexism etc. aside).
Though if you've had such a bad time with them I don't really understand why you're so keen to stay with them? Just switch to another bank.0 -
Just close it if you don't want the account. Then apply for the Lloyds Club account if the features of that suit you better. Why do you feel compelled to go on the downgrade route?0

Hi Snowedunder,
I've just responded to a post of yours on a similar thread, but have just noticed this thread too.
To clarify, you're certainly under no obligation to continue paying for the benefits of a Premier account when they aren't suited to you. While you can apply to change to a different Added Value Account with a lower monthly fee, we will assess your eligibility for this at the time of the application, so it’s possible this could be declined. However, if that isn’t available, there should be no restrictions on changing the account to our standard Classic account (which carries no monthly fee).
Can you give me some more info on the reasons you were given for this refusal?
Thanks,

Thank you for your response, I will look at the other thread in a moment.
I have tried to downgrade via the web site, and all options are blocked before I even attempt to apply, no explanations - I am logged into my account so they know it is me!
As I have the Premier Account, and there are no problems, I am a good customer, except I will not be messed around with, there are certainly no valid reasons why I would be refused any other account other than your top account.
It just feels to me that I am being 'nudged out' because I have made 2 complaints - both upheld - this year.0 -

Why don't you log out of your Lloyds account and then apply online for the Club Lloyds account and see how you get on with that?0 -

Perhaps down grading isn't a feature of the online service.

I guess it is a question of which came first, the cart or the horse.
I use the OD facility because it is there.
I tried to use travel Insurance but because of health and age issues no insurance available to me
Again, used the AA 3 times, because it was there, but am actually covered under motability too.
Got me on Mobile phone insurance - guess I would have stood the loss if the insurance was not there.
Ultimately speaking though, even though I used these services, have I really had £1250's worth of services? Most definitely not, time for a change then.
Thanks for the comments.0 -

I've spent many more thousands of £'s on insurances and have had very little in return...that's just how insurance works.0
