Final update, which might be of interest to anyone else who finds themselves in a similar situation. After being promised 5 callbacks that never materialised, the sixth one (promised by an escalation manager as opposed to a customer service agent) actually came through - and, would you believe it, within the time frame given.

So, I just got off the phone with a chap who told me that they would be collecting the HTC Mini 2 they sent me, and once that arrives to their repair centre they will send me a new One M8.

I am very happy to say that I managed to get this result without once raising my voice or being rude to the customer service people, though I do think it might have been quicker had I resulted to such tactics. That, certainly, was my experience when I worked for Motorola. The shouters and swearers were the ones who got their way, more often than not, while nice folk tend to give up and lose out.

So, fellow consumers, stick to your guns if you're in the right!
