I'm going to propose

I'm going to propose to my boyfriend of several (hundred) years around Xmas time. He knows it's coming at some point, I've already told him I'm going to do it at some point - he pretty much blatantly refused to do it after I drunkenly asked if he thinks he'd marry me (oops) a few months back (he said yes, which is lucky!).
Anyway, I'm completely stumped for ideas of how to do it. I have GAD so public proposals are a no-no. Public appearances are pretty much a no-no to be honest! haha.
I also want to know opinions on xmas proposals... it's a bit of a cop out to get him a ring as a xmas present!
Do I wear a ring? Do I have to buy it for myself?
Financially speaking this is going to be a pain. Can you get engagement rings from tesco?
Anyway, joking aside, we're both men and love eachother dearly. We want to get married and I've got to propose because I'm a control freak.
Bombard me with ideas, please.

Not for an engagement, but I sent an ex on a Christmas treasure hunt one year. I hid letters all over the house and he had to rearrange them to find the hiding place of his gift.
I'd actually put it under the tree and had initially denied that the big obvious present sitting there was for him. He got the 4 letters and sat there asking what an ETRE was...hence an ex!
Anyway, you could do something like this, except he finds the ringand you then do your proposal. Just the two of you. Or he finds a bottle of champers and two glasses, you propose and then take each other shopping to choose engagement rings together.
As for where to buy the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter often has great value rings available. High street stores are also alright for reasonably price rings...yes you might be able to convert Tesco vouchers. There are also some decent online retailers with good prices but check reviews first.
It's not necessarily a cop out to get him the ring as the gift, however if you're then going to buy yourself one and he's already got you something it would be a bit mean. Probably better off keeping the proposal as a separate thing to Xmas gift giving.

I don't see any reason why a man can't wear an engagement ring so if you think he'd like one, why not? However when the topic of engagement rings comes up on here a lot of people advise proposing ringless and then going ring shopping together so you can get something they will really love.
You could take him shopping in the boxing day sales and walk him in to a jewellers, and when he asks why you're there tell him it's so he can pick out a ring because you want to marry him.
Definitely a cop out to give him a ring as a christmas present though!0 -
Rings can cost as much or as little as you want - plenty for 99p on ebay. Not as nice as ones costing many times as much, but work (you know - round, can put your finger through them). It depends on what you both like and also on how long you plan to wear them - would you be replacing them with wedding rings or likely to wear both? If you aren't likely to wear them for the long term it will be less important to get one which can be resized as your hands change. But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Rather than a Christmas present, what about getting a make-your-own-crackers set and putting it in there? You could even print your own engagement related joke to go in it if you've got a bit of wit.
Cheesy, perhaps, but aren't many proposals?0 -
When we got engaged I bought my fianc! (now husband) a signet ring with a small diamond in it. I bought it with the money I was saving to buy a new telly with.:rotfl:
I think both having a ring is a lovely gesture.... That's if you both like rings of course. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I did think about the cracker thing, because what's cheesier than proposing anyway, right? But I'm making a 6 course meal for 16 family members on Xmas eve (that's our xmas meal day) so it'd be a bit awkward with so many eyes watching as I want it to be personal.
I did the treasure hunt with my niece last year when I got her One Direction tickets (best uncle ever!) so I can't do that again..
I'm thinking about strapping a ring to my dog's back and waking him up by launching him on the bed lolI can't add up.0 -
